Halloween is coming a little early this year, as “Insidious: Out of the Further” is opening in theaters this weekend. The sixth entry in Sony’s horror franchise has made $3 million in Thursday previews at the box office.
The new movie, which is a sequel to 2023’s “Insidious: The Red Door,” is aiming for a debut between $23 million to $27 million, which would put it in second place behind the $2 billion blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Sony will have the top two movies at the box office this weekend as “Brand New Day” is on track to add $35 million to $40 million in its fourth weekend.
“Insidious: Out of the Further” will have a smaller opening than its predecessor “The Red Door” (which launched with $33 million), but it only cost $18 million to produce so it won’t take a lot to turn a profit. All of the movies in the horror series have been low-budget hits, and overall they’ve grossed a total of $740 million globally. “Out of the Further” introduces Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and more as the supernatural realm known as The Further crosses over and brings the undead into the real world.
This weekend also sees the release of the latest Jason Statham action movie, “Mutiny,” which is aiming to open with $8 million to $10 million. It cost $40 million to produce, and Lionsgate acquired North American rights but didn’t finance the film. There’s also the comedy “Spa Weekend,” which has a $20 million price tag and is on track to open with $3 million to $5 million. Universal and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which surpassed “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with $1.35 billion globally, is projected to add around $15 million in its sixth week.
