The Utah Jazz took a big swing at the trade deadline this past season by acquiring two-time All-Star and former Defensive Player of the Year, Jaren Jackson Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies.

And it was in that deal where the Jazz made the surprising move to ship out their rookie guard, Walter Clayton Jr., along with multiple other assets. Clayton spent less than 50 games playing in Utah before the front office opted to take a different direction, and he was moved out.

It also seems like it was a move that, for Clayton, wasn't one that was too expected on his behalf, either.

What Walter Clayton Jr. Said About Trade From Jazz

Clayton spoke with Grind City Media during a February interview, where he spoke about some of his experience within his first year in the NBA, and what his time was like while he was stationed in Utah.

And it was in that interview where Clayton said many told him that "rookies don't get traded." Which, when fast-forwarding to the trade deadline, wouldn't hold up to be too true for his situation.

"Just a lot of figuring things out. Coming off the bench over there in Utah and just trying to find a role. I was hearing the whole year, ‘Things are going to be different after the [trade] deadline [and] rookies don’t get traded.’ Rookies do get traded, in case anybody was wondering," Clayton said.

"[Utah] was smooth. I’ll say the food is better [in Memphis], but the people up there are nice. They’ve got a great organization, so I definitely enjoyed my time there."

Clayton, in his time with the Jazz, did look like he was set up to be a future cornerstone in Utah for multiple years.

During the 45 games he played with the Jazz, Clayton averaged 6.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, shooting 39.8% from the field and 30.8% from three in a little less than 20 minutes a night.

The front office traded up to get him in the 2025 NBA Draft and was bullish on his intangibles and chances to be a future fixture of their backcourt. But things change quickly in the league.

The Jazz had a ton of interest in Jaren Jackson Jr. And to ensure they were able to land him, they had to give up one of their premier young guards to do so. Utah would end up dealing Clayton, along with Taylor Hendricks, to make the swap happen, and indeed decided to trade their rookie.

From Clayton's perspective, he wasn't hurt about the deal. At the end of the day, it was part of the business, and he's just glad to be dealt for a good player like Jackson Jr.

I’m not going to say I was hurt," Clayton said of the trade. "[Jaren Jackson Jr.] is a great player, (at least) I got traded for somebody."

Now, the Jazz have their All-Star pairing for Lauri Markkanen in Jackson. Clayton is in a fresh situation in Memphis, and the two are ready to move forward into the 2026-27–– one that will begin with both of these teams tipping off their regular seasons against one another for opening night on October 21st in Memphis.
