Mike Isaac is joining The Atlantic as a staff writer later this year. In an announcement, editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg and executive editor Adrienne LaFrance write: “You are undoubtedly familiar with his groundbreaking reporting on, among other companies, Meta and Uber, as well as his many other scoops and investigations. Mike is joining us at a key moment, as we work overtime to expand our presence in Silicon Valley.”
Last week, The Atlantic announced the hires of Sophie Haigney and Robert F. Worth (who had been a contributing writer) as staff writers; Zachary Fryer-Biggs, Jebediah Reed, and Alex Stockton as senior editors; Lindsey Sitz as a producer for video podcasts; and Kevin Roose as a contributing writer.
Today’s staff note is below:
Dear everyone,
We’re writing with exciting news this morning: One of the country’s best reporters, Mike Isaac, is joining The Atlantic as a staff writer. For the past 12 years, Mike has been the leading technology reporter for The New York Times. You are undoubtedly familiar with his groundbreaking reporting on, among other companies, Meta and Uber, as well as his many other scoops and investigations. Mike is joining us at a key moment, as we work overtime to expand our presence in Silicon Valley.
About Mike: In addition to having broken some of the most consequential stories of our time, Mike is also a brilliant writer and fantastically creative. On a personal level, he is also hilarious. He is drawn to the biggest stories and most difficult reporting challenges, and knows Silicon Valley better than most anyone. In addition to his daily coverage of AI, the strange economics of the modern information system, and the most powerful people on the planet, Mike is also a best-selling author of Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, which was adapted into a Showtime series of the same name. (Those who have followed Mike’s reporting as closely as we have over the years will remember when he uncovered the existence of the company’s secret Greyball program.)
Mike is a journalist who matches the mission of The Atlantic—someone who brings great reporting firepower and tremendous writing talent, plus a deep love of magazines, and an uncommon level of ambition and creativity. We could not be more excited to welcome him and cannot wait for him to get started. Mike starts in December and will remain based in the Bay Area.
Please join us in welcoming Mike to The Atlantic.
Best wishes,
Jeff and Adrienne
