Tech tries a new message: You'd love data centers if China wasn't making you hate data centers

Everyone* hates data centers now.

How did that happen?

There are lots of theories: People are worried about the environment. Or electric bills. Or their jobs. Or imperious Big Tech billionaires ordering them around. All of the above.

Also: It's China's fault.

That last one doesn't come up in polling. But it's quite popular on certain corners of the pro-AI internet.

The theory spelled out: China wants Americans to turn against AI data centers, so that America will fall behind China in the AI race. So it is using the internet to brainwash Americans to hate data centers. A psyop, per prominent VC Garry Tan:

Is that possible?

Maaaaaaaybe: In June, OpenAI said it had evidence some China-linked accounts were trying to use the platform to generate anti-AI content they could distribute on social media, like this:

But that same report said it didn't have any evidence that those efforts had shifted public opinion.

And after celebrity investor Kevin O'Leary accused opponents of his Utah data center of working on behalf of China, he later acknowledged that he had "no evidence" that was true, and walked the claim back (so did Fox News).

It would not be surprising if it eventually turns out that there was a coordinated social media campaign to try to influence how Americans feel about AI and data centers. All kinds of people use social media to try to influence sentiment. And after the 2016 election, social media platforms started paying extra attention to documenting covert efforts that tried to do that.

It's also possible that it's easier for bad actors to act badly on social media right now. In the years after Elon Musk bought Twitter, social media platforms have gutted the trust and safety teams that used to monitor those platforms. Outside watchdogs, like the Stanford Internet Observatory, have been shuttered or neutered.

Then again: Everyone who owns a big social media platform in the US is also pouring many tens of billions into AI, much of which is going to US data center projects.

So if you think that X, or Meta's Facebook and Instagram, or Google's YouTube, or TikTok (whose US operations are partly owned by Larry Ellison's Oracle) are being used to turn Americans against AI, you'd think that those platforms might be doing something to stop that.

Instead, the Big Tech industry's main response to Americans not liking its AI plans is to lecture people online, and complain about the industry's messaging. (Meta has also just dangled a $1 billion fund for towns that host its data centers.)

But "we need a better message/messenger" and "our message isn't working because of China" are two sides of the same coin: The belief that people are misguided because they've been misguided, and not because they actually feel that way.

And if that sounds familiar, think about your own reactions to things you can't abide — like, say, an election result.

It's quite tempting to blame Mark Zuckerberg or Rupert Murdoch for the fact that many of your fellow citizens voted for someone or something you find abhorrent. It's much harder to grapple with the fact that many of your fellow citizens hold beliefs you can't stand.

Welcome to the club, Big Tech.

*Ok. Not everyone. But a supermajority of Americans are opposed to data centers — an astonishing number for a country that can't agree on just about anything else.

If there’s one thing young moviegoers seem to fear these days, it’s the idea of the in-between. The term liminal horror has gone from niche internet speak to Hollywood trend, thanks to the acclaimed TV show Severance and the recent smash-hit movie Backrooms. Stories like these mine the unsettling feeling of nondescript office corridors and basement halls that seem to self-replicate into infinity; this spring also saw the U.S. release of the excellent Japanese film Exit 8, a video-game adaptation about someone getting trapped in a subway station with seemingly no way out. Now there’s It Ends, a low-budget bit of creepy cleverness with a punchy pitch: What if you got lost driving down a road that never ends?

That this type of premise has grown more commonplace makes sense. Such a film typically needs only one set (for example, a long, lonely road, flanked by trees), a small cast of characters, and a spare, intentionally circular script. It Ends uses that scrappy charm to its advantage, the lack of frills dialing up a sense of realism. The film, written and directed by the newcomer Alexander Ullom, follows James (played by Phinehas Yoon), Day (Akira Jackson), Fisher (Noah Toth), and Tyler (Mitchell Cole), four friends who are headed on a celebratory graduation road trip. Their drive is occupied by the sort of nonsensical, wandering conversations young people love to have; there’s no real sign of anything being wrong until Tyler notices that he’s missed his turn.

The horror builds gradually, spikes, then slows to an existentially brutal crawl. The group realizes that there’s no way off the road, but when they get out of the car to look around, swarms of people emerge from the woods and fight to enter their vehicle. As the friends continue on in search of safety, they notice that the gas tank never goes empty, they never feel hungry, and nobody needs to sleep. They’re in a sort of limbo, condemned to keep moving despite having no destination. It’s essentially a Gen Z take on Sartre’s No Exit, a gentle riff on hell being other people, with a few jump scares tossed in for fun.

But while prior small-scale horror movies such as The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity had an unseen villain guiding the scares, It Ends thrives on an utter lack of information about what is happening and why. The terror of liminality is how effortlessly it evokes the creepiness of a bad dream, the kind that begins in the middle of the story and seems just off. There’s no monster around the corner, no demonic puzzle to be solved. The characters of It Ends initially debate what’s going on, keeping track of patterns occurring around them in search of some explanation. While James keeps doing so as a way of staying sane, the others start to accept their frozen existence; the strangers in the woods, it seems, are also confined to the road’s environs.

That Ullom manages to squeeze a feature-length movie out of such a mundane premise is impressive; it helps that his cast is charming enough to carry it off. As the film plods on, it starts to skip further and further ahead in time, warping the viewer’s sense of chronology. It Ends is more aggressively aimless than other recent entries in the genre: Exit 8 saw its heroes try to figure a way out of their infinite subway station (it was based on a video game, so some resolution was built into the plot); the protagonists of Backrooms discovered a world of non-Euclidean corridors and lobbies in a basement, then found out that opportunistic corporate villains were plundering it; such a revelation hints at sequels that could expand its lore.

The simplicity of It Ends, by comparison, is wonderful and jarring, as is the total inability for future properties to spill out of it. Part of the dread that liminal horror mines is the drudgery of the never-ending scroll, a familiar feeling for anyone who’s been on social media; no matter how much you look, you’ll never hit bottom, only summon more of whatever the algorithm wants to serve you. It Ends is set entirely outdoors but captures that same fear of being stuck without any touchstones to distinguish simulation from reality.

US government lab is probing Chinese lidar for security vulnerabilities

A Department of Energy lab is investigating whether Chinese lidar sensors might pose a security risk if they become widely used on vehicles in the United States, TechCrunch has learned.

The review is being performed by the Idaho National Laboratory, according to two people familiar with the effort, who were granted anonymity to discuss it. The lab has said the research is being funded by a company — or a group of companies — in the electric and autonomous vehicle industries, the sources told TechCrunch.

It’s not immediately clear which companies are supporting the review. Representatives for Rivian, General Motors, Ford, Kodiak, Lucid Motors, Nuro, and Uber — companies that are reported to be considering Chinese lidar — told TechCrunch they weren’t aware of the review. Nvidia, Zoox, and Aurora didn’t respond to questions about whether they are involved.

Idaho National Laboratory declined to comment on the review. A spokesperson told TechCrunch in June, and again in July, that “this isn’t a project that we’re at liberty to discuss with reporters.” China’s leading lidar suppliers, Hesai and RoboSense, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging, is a sensor technology that uses laser pulses to measure the distance to nearby objects. It has long been a popular tool for companies working on autonomous vehicles because it offers a high-resolution picture of a self-driving car’s immediate surroundings.

The review is underway as pressure mounts to ban the use of Chinese lidar sensors on American roads, with lawmakers crafting multiple bills.

Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), who is spearheading the Securing Infrastructure from Adversaries Act with Senator Ted Budd (R-NC), told TechCrunch in a statement that she’s primarily concerned about Chinese lidar being used for military or industrial espionage.

“As infrastructure becomes more sophisticated, the threat Chinese LiDAR technology poses to American communities and our national security cannot be allowed to go unchecked,” she said. “We need to be doing more to protect Americans and that starts with ensuring taxpayer dollars aren’t being used to purchase technologies that could be used to spy on us.”

Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI), who is co-sponsoring a different bill aimed at banning the use of Chinese lidar, told CNBC last month that he’s concerned “back doors” could “transmit information back to these Chinese Communist interests.”

Cost over concerns?

There are different layers of risk when it comes to using Chinese lidar, according to Omer Keilaf, CEO and co-founder of Israeli lidar company Innoviz.

The first is basic supply chain risk. Keilaf — who said he wasn’t aware of the Idaho National Laboratory review until TechCrunch asked him about it — said that China’s government has deemed lidar to be a strategically important technology.

“So, if, for example, an OEM now builds its entire autonomous driving stack based on a Chinese supply chain, that’s a huge risk down the road,” he said in a recent interview.

The review is more focused on the cybersecurity risks, though — and possibly on giving Chinese-made lidar a clean bill of health in this area, according to the two people familiar with it.

Keilaf described two major cybersecurity risks that Chinese lidar might present. One is that the sensors could be disabled en masse, disrupting vehicles in motion and bricking ones that aren’t.

Researchers have shown in the past that individual lidar sensors can be disabled using lasers. But it’s not obvious how China could cause a widespread disruption of lidar sensors being actively used by robotaxis.

Keilaf also said it’s possible to compress the finely detailed data that lidar sensors collect about their surroundings and transmit that data via a cellular chip.

“As a person that spent seven years in the in the [Israeli] intelligence force, I can assure you, it’s not very difficult to extract that information. Eventually, the amount of data that the lidar is generating is pretty easily compressed if someone wants to,” he said.

These concerns are relevant now because the cost of lidar has come down dramatically in the last decade.

Lidar has traditionally been far more expensive than other sensors like radar or cameras. Tesla has eschewed it altogether, with CEO Elon Musk calling it a “crutch” and preferring to build his company’s entire autonomy stack around cameras alone.

But Chinese companies like Hesai and RoboSense have quickly scaled and lowered prices, bringing the cost of a product that cost as much as $75,000 a decade ago down to just a few hundred bucks in some cases.

American lidar companies have tried to keep pace, but it’s difficult to match China’s economies of scale and lower costs of labor and capital. As a result, U.S. lidar makers have spent the last few years consolidating or, in the case of Luminar, filing for bankruptcy.

This has prompted several automakers and autonomous vehicle companies in the U.S. to consider using Chinese lidar sensors as part of their autonomous vehicle sensor suites.

Rivian, which is planning to make a version of its new R2 SUV with a lidar sensor integrated into the roof, is reportedly one of those companies.

In March, CEO RJ Scaringe told Reuters the company is considering making its own lidar sensors in the U.S. by leveraging Chinese tech, possibly as part of a joint venture, according to the outlet.

“A number ⁠of different car manufacturers are thinking about how they could do that either together, or at least through a shared alignment to say, hey, let’s develop production capacity in the United States for this, or at least outside China,” Scaringe said at the time, noting the company was in “active discussions” with lidar firms and that the effort might also include other automakers.

Rivian’s chief financial officer later said the company has no plans to bring lidar development in-house.

U.S. companies are allowed to use Chinese-made lidar, but the future regulatory landscape isn’t clear. The Department of Defense has placed both Hesai and RoboSense on its so-called 1260H list for allegedly supporting the People’s Liberation Army, a designation that restricts their ability to work with the U.S. military.

In 2025, the Commerce Department implemented a rule that prohibits the use of Chinese-made connectivity hardware in U.S. passenger cars, but lidar and other autonomous vehicle sensors are not prohibited.

Lawmakers like Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), who introduced the bill Moolenaar is co-sponsoring, have spent years warning that widespread adoption could make it possible for China to “gather sensitive data or disrupt our systems.”

For now, concerns about widespread disabling of Chinese lidar remain just that — concerns. But there is at least one incident that offers a glimpse of what such a disruption would look like. In early 2024, customers using Hesai lidar sensors saw their autonomous vehicles suddenly stop working for an entire day because the company had not properly accounted for the extra day of the leap year.

Aaron Taylor Saw Texas Longhorns OL Up Close Before Trevor Goosby's Injury

In promotion of Johnsonville Sausage's partnership with the Joe Moore Award, CBS Sports analyst, Super Bowl XXXI champion, and the founder of the award, former offensive lineman Aaron Taylor, sat down with Texas Longhorns On SI to talk all things offensive line.

The award, named after Taylor's legendary offensive line coach at Notre Dame, is given to the nation's most outstanding offensive line. Though there is no watch list for the award, Texas has the talent to be in the conversation by December if things break right.

In fall camp this week, things didn't exactly break right. Though Longhorns left tackle Trevor Goosby recently went down with a bone bruise, he is expected to return in 2-3 weeks, putting him in line to be back by Week 1 vs. Texas State or Week 2 against Ohio State at the latest.

Still, having an injury to Arch Manning's trusty blindside tackle so close to that marquee matchup with the Buckeyes is worrying.

Taylor was at practice last week on the Forty Acres. While he noted Goosby's standout performance, he also spoke to how strong the line looked overall, rotation players included.

"I know Trevor's a tough kid. I was at practice Thursday of last week, and he looked phenomenal," Taylor said. "The offensive line was doing a really nice job both in the run and the pass game, and he certainly was the leader of that pack. That's a devastating injury, and we know what happened a season ago with injuries. It was really hard to find the right units and get the production that it needed. They got running backs in the backfield, Sark solved it, and then boom, left tackle No. 1 goes down."

"Based on what I saw at practice, Texas finally has some depth. They got some talent. Now it's young, and some of it's inexperienced, and that's what you kind of worry about. But you do have a week to get yourself ready and shake out those kinks. That buys you some time to get Trevor back, because he's gonna need to be at full strength against a loaded Buckeyes squad."

Who is the Texas Longhorns' Backup Left Tackle?

Andre Cojoe, who missed the entire 2025 season after an ACL tear last August, has been stepping up in practice after Goosby's injury. Cojoe redshirted in 2023 and is in his fourth year with the program.

Cojoe is in line to return next year, and he could carve out a path to the starting job, though he's mainly worked at right tackle this offseason, and Texas also has five-star freshman Ismael Camara coming down the pike.

Jordan Coleman is also an option. Coleman is inexperienced, having only played one game against Sam Houston State. That was a 55-0 blowout that hardly prepared Coleman for a potential start against Ohio State.

Still, he's been getting left tackle snaps this offseason and is most natural at that position. Coleman also has experience at guard.

Goosby is not expected to miss much time, if any. But if he does, there are replacement options that have a lot to prove. Taylor believes those are high-ceiling options.

And so far since the Goosby injury, he has been exactly right.

Is Iowa Basketball's Schedule Ethically Manipulating NCAA Tournament Metrics?

Listen, teams can only play by the rules given to them.

Be it NIL, the transfer portal, or now even scheduling, as long as it's within the rules (which I am not sure anyone even knows what a rule is anymore), teams should push the envelope as much as they can.

That may be what the Iowa Hawkeyes are doing in an ethical way. The Hawkeyes have loaded the non-conference slate in 2026, which is going to test them and create great matchups.

It may also be manipulating some metrics tied very closely to the NCAA Tournament.

Iowa basketball's 2026 schedule is loaded to start the year

Iowa is putting itself out there against the power conferences this season. There is the annual Cy-Hawk game against Iowa State, which is a perennial NCAA Tournament-caliber team.

The Hawkeyes have added games against Virginia Tech, Creighton, and Alabama as well. The Hokies meet Iowa in Sioux City, Iowa, while Creighton and Alabama come to Des Moines, Iowa.

Is Iowa scheming the expanded NCAA Tournament?

With the NCAA Tournament moving to 76 teams, the focus on metrics tied to seeding and making the field is only going to become that much more scrutinized. Yep, get ready to learn more about quads than you ever thought possible.

Those quads play right into each team's NET rating, which is from the NCAA Evaluation Tool. And guess what? This tool just so happens to be one of the metrics the NCAA Tournament committee looks at when selecting the field.

For context, last year saw Iowa finish at No. 22 in overall NET. The Hawkeyes were 7-10 against Quad 1 teams and 5-2 against Quad 2 teams, the two groups the current non-conference slate figures to fall into.

Simply scheduling those teams, even with a loss, as long as it isn't egregious, can boost Iowa's NET rating for playing power conference teams that also carry respectable NET ratings.

So, the question is: with a 76-team NCAA Tournament, are the Iowa Hawkeyes taking an ethical approach to scheming the metrics with a loaded schedule that may not prove to be all that harmful in the end?

I don't want to assume Iowa is doing that. There is a part of me that truly believes Iowa has eyes on becoming a yearly player in the Big Ten under Ben McCollum.

That said, I know how college sports work. Would it be possible that Iowa may be playing by the rules given to them to enhance NCAA Tournament metrics before playing a game? It's 2026. Anything in college sports is possible.

Two Texas A&M Offensive Lineman Who Could Shake Up The Status Quo and Earn a Starting Job

A battle is brewing in the Texas A&M offensive line room.

No one knows when the official winner will be declared, but it's a tight race between two left-side positions that could easily go either way.

For head coach Mike Elko, it will be a difficult decision, but he has his coaching staff to help him choose. As it stands now, the center position is probably secured, with left tackle and left guard still without a firm answer on who will get the starting position.

At left tackle, it is a neck-and-neck situation between Tyree Adams and Lamont Rogers, and at left guard, it is a three-person contest between Coen Echols, Blake Ivy and Isendre Ahfua. Here are the two names that could shake up the status quo and secure the starting job.

Returning for another season of collegiate football is Blake Ivy, the big man from League City, Texas. He was lucky to get action in 10 games in the year prior and contributed to the offense piling up plenty of yards on the ground and in the air.

The 6-foot-3 stud was also part of the Maroon Goons that were ranked No. 3 nationally in TFL’s allowed, ninth in fourth-down conversion percentage, and No. 19 in scoring offense. Don’t forget that he helped the offense rank No. 23 in total offense.

He can move easily with his impressive power at the line of scrimmage. He has plenty of length and is versatile. He is flexible in switching positions and is quick out of his stance.

His mobility makes him stand out compared to his competition, but he also makes sure he can shut down the bull rushers trying to get to his quarterback, Marcel Reed. As a junior, he has had the chance to learn under the Elko system and work closely with the offensive line coach, Adam Cushing. His ability to surge forward and finish blocks makes him a solid option to shake up the starting five.

Lamont Rogers

Another offensive lineman who could quietly work his way up the depth chart and find himself on the field a ton is Lamont Rogers. He is a huge sophomore from Mesquite, Texas, with the frame and elite traits to fit the role.

The 6-foot-6 lineman can make noise as a run blocker, opening gaps for his running backs, and he's a proven man with good pass protection. He has hands that are one of the biggest qualities of his game, and he uses them to double-team defenders a lot. There are times when he could flat-out pancake people and not hesitate to do it in the moment.

Elko mentioned that he was a highly sought-after player and that he was really excited to add him to the class. It isn’t clear where he falls on the depth chart, but things are certain. He is a smart football player who will be aggressive and disciplined when he plays.

It is all wait-and-see what these two can do the rest of fall camp.

“The biggest challenge you always have in fall camp is there's not a lot of relative comparison that you've played with on a field in SEC football,” Elko said. “Until you get to September 5 and start rolling it out there against competitive people, it'll be a little bit of a wait-and-see.”

Bonnaroo to Take Off 2027 to Recover From Extreme Weather

Organizers for Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival have announced that the festival will be taking a “much-needed” year off in 2027.

The annual festival, which takes place in Manchester, TN, has been plagued by severe weather over the past couple of years, leading to its cancelation in 2025 just a day after it started. In a post on its socials, Bonnaroo organizers explained that the extreme conditions are the root cause of needing to take a break in 2027 so that the campgrounds can recover.

“As you know, we spent a great deal of effort and money working to improve the campgrounds and Centeroo in the months leading into the 2026 festival,” reads the post. “That included improved drainage, 4.5 miles of new roadways, and 135 acres of new grass, all which strengthened The Farm’s resiliency to Mother Nature. With limited time to recuperate from back to back years of storms, including the heavy rainstorm on Sunday this year, The Farm, particularly the main venue, needs a break to rest and recover.”

Organizers said “this wasn’t an easy decision, and not one we take lightly, but in our hearts, we know this break will only make Bonnaroo better.”

Bonnaroo has been canceled several times over the past few years, first in 2020 after it was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic before inevitably being canceled. The following year, it was called off due to rainfall, and in 2025, Bonnaroo had a strong start on its first day before organizers ultimately canceled the rest of the festival due to weather.

Bonnaroo 2026 took place from June 11-14, featuring headlining sets from the Strokes, Noah Kahan, Kehsa, Role Model and more.

How Disneyland’s Cast Members Work Behind the Scenes to Create Magic for the Holidays: ‘Storytelling Is a Centerpiece to Everything We Do at the Company’

In a 400,000 square-foot warehouse in Cerritos, Disney cast members create magic.

It’s the facility where cast members create decor for the park — right now they are putting the finishing touches on Halloween and have already started winter holiday-scapes — fix everything from restaurant appliances to the iconic spinning teacups; it’s where signs get fresh coats of paint and carousel horses receive tender loving care. The facility houses machine shops, fabrication shops, a sewing team, a paint shop, and all kinds of skilled professionals who keep Disneyland beautiful and running efficiently.

And all the creativity and skill behind the decor and park enhancement is there to serve the storytelling. “Storytelling is a centerpiece to everything we do at the company, and particularly in how we approach our business. We always approach it story-first,” says 21-year veteran Phil Rahn, director, resort enhancement & horticulture. “Whatever we put in, whatever we design, whatever we create, there has got to be a reason for it.”

Tristen Tierney, associate project manager, resort enhancement (9 years at Disneyland), told his parents that he wanted to work at Disneyland when he was “11 or 12” and had already spent a couple years documenting the park’s decor, and deconstructing it to figure out what made it “elevated,” he tells Variety.

When he got a job at Disneyland, “I started buying the decor from property control”: cast members get to buy retired items at a deep discount. “I’d take it apart, really see how it was put together, and then I would rehab it myself. And I started creating a portfolio using the existing decor here at Disneyland.”

The team was finishing up the decor for the Main Street USA Pumpkin Festival.

The lamp posts on Main Street were set to be topped with the popular Mickey Mouse-shaped pumpkins backed with traditional fall foliage. Bunting will be attached using a clever slider system and secured with grommets to keep it in place. The pumpkins are fiberglass, a big improvement over the foam ones previously used. “They are lighter, and more robust,” Tierney says.

Everything is hand-carved, painted and sewn in the facility but craftspeople.

Every leaf, pumpkin, ribbon, paint and fabric must withstand the harsh Southern California sun and heat — the park officially unveils its Halloween decor Aug. 21 and on Nov. 1 it comes down. And those months are some of the hottest in the region.

“We have to easily be able to store the items here in the shop, be able to pull them down. We do a rehab on all our items, so every item goes through each decorator station,” Tierney says, adding that the team will make fixes and adjustments. “We don’t just put the put the thing back in the warehouse, forget about it, and put it back up. We need to make sure that it’s show ready and it’s safe. And this is just part of the checks we do for our over 8,000 pieces of individual pieces of decor.”

The enhancement team also experiments with installation techniques — the quicker the better as they must do their work after the park closes (sometimes that’s midnight) and before it opens at 7:30 a.m.
And that team can be 12-15 people or more, depending on the size and scale of the projects, as Disneyland works with outside vendors to make sure that the decor is ready to go by opening time. “That provides a very small window for us to get in there. So, we have to be ready to go, and be able to install very quickly, and get back here within just a couple hours,” Tierney says.

The seasonal decor’s themes and colors are developed with Walt Disney Imagineering and the Enhancement team.

The warehouse contains hundreds of boxes of florals and other small decor, all neatly and clearly labeled, rows of every textile used for umbrellas, chairs, bunting and other uses, rows of spare parts, props for the Main Street stores and other environments — an eye-popping inventory of everything large and small needed to keep the details of Disneyland’s attractions perfect.

There’s a giant teacup — stripped down to primer gray — in the spray paint bay waiting for its new coats. The machinists and fabricators are kept busy rehabbing the guts of cars from rides, making sure they are safe and can support the millions of guests each year.

The facility’s mechanics, machinists, metal workers and welders handle bigger projects involving vehicles from rides and other big display pieces. One of the ongoing tasks is to make sure rides are safe and in top working condition, like stripping down a Toy Story ride vehicle which needed some welded repairs and strengthening rods.

Devin Sweet, show overhaul sign painter and 20-year park vet, introduces the Show Overhaul sign shop, which is part of the Show Overhaul team. “We take care of the show elements that our guests personally interact with, so that would be attraction vehicles, outdoor vending carts and even trash cans. Some of the elements that maybe get overlooked in the park, but all tell the story of Disneyland,” she says.

Disneyland trash cans have fandom now, though. “Last year we had this great group of guests all dressed up as different Disneyland trash cans. It was fantastic,” she says. “But the great thing about these trash cans that’s maybe overlooked sometimes is that they have hand-painted elements on them.”
The artisans stay true to the original colors and designs of the park — never deviating in 70 years.
And everything is hand-painted and hand-drafted with love — there are no computer terminals around and certainly no AI agents.

“I think that’s always been a part of our story, right? So Walt Disney, when he first created Disneyland, he really wanted to bring his guests back in time. He wanted to bring them to a fantasy world,” says Devin tktkt. “So as soon as you step foot into Disneyland, you’re stepping into his childhood of Marcel, Missouri, at the turn of the 20th century, and so everything there had to be meticulously designed, and you wouldn’t have a computer-generated sign at the turn of the 20th century, right? So, it only makes sense that it’s done in the old-fashioned way. And as artists, we’re so lucky that Disneyland really values that. Because this is a bygone art form, sign painting. And so, the fact that we get to do this and help bring that story to life, our guests notice.”

She was also working on refreshing a carousel horse called Lucifer’s Rose (all the carousel horses have names). She notes that the horses were bought by Disney in the 1950s from parks that were closing and are all hand-carved antiques — some even dating to 1875 — and each has a theme and color palette. “They’re solid wood, and so it’s our job to maintain these really special pieces of art. We follow artwork given to us by Walt Disney Imagineering, so that the horse looks exactly the same every time we do it.”

The gold on the horses is real as well.

“Our art is part of people’s memories and their stories,” she says.

There’s another paint shop where artisans are getting Christmas holiday decor ready. Rahn says, “This is a group that we call Small but Mighty. There are seven pictorial artists on our team, but they cover all the resort and then all the interior black light painting for all the attractions.”

He notes that former Disney topper Bob Iger just got a window on Main Street, “This is the team that made the window.” The shop’s proprietors’ names on Main Street all have a connection to Walt Disney and Disneyland, so it’s a great honor to get one.

Inside the part of the tidy and ordered facility is a ribbon of corrugated metal decorated with large Disney characters. It’s actually the walls of the old machine, paint and other workshops at Disneyland. “So, when we moved over here, we wanted to take a little piece of that with us,” says Rahn. “So this is all hand-painted stuff that the artist did over the years.”

Tradition, memories and stories are what help drive the artisans. “Because we always have to keep up with the industry, and we need to make sure that we’re making wise business decisions while at the same time, we’re honoring the craft and we’re honoring the legacy of Disney, it all comes back to storytelling,” says Rahn. “So if you’re walking down Main Street and you see a sign for Carnation, and that’s a printed vinyl graphic, that’s not going to make sense. That’s going to take you out of the story that you’re in. So we have to make sure that the decisions we make are still honoring the tradition, but also the stories that we’re telling, and that really is what drives our decision-making. You know, there are places in the park where you can get away with printed vinyl signs, but we have to be really intentional with those decisions.”

The NASCAR community is still trying to get over the sudden passing of Kyle Busch earlier this year. And nobody has been hit harder than Busch’s family, which includes his brother, Kurt.

Kurt Busch (who is fresh off winning the IROC Unser Family Cup last weekend) did an interview that aired on Today on Friday where he shared aspects of his brother Kyle’s final day, along with his parting words with the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion.

“I was there at the hospital; I was there all day, hoping, praying, hoping for a turnaround,” Kurt said. “I said, ‘I got you man, Come on. I got you. I got you, Come on. Be strong.’

“It wasn’t fair,” Kurt added while wiping away tears.

Friday marks exactly three months since Kyle’s passing, which was the result of bacterial pneumonia developing “into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” according to a statement from his family.

“I miss the words that we never spoke to each other and the vibe that we had on track,” Kurt added after mentioning how him and his brother managed to communicate on the race track without needing to actually speak.

“There is no book; there is no outline on what we’re supposed to do right now,” he said when speaking about how to try and navigate this new world without his beloved brother.

Kurt deserves a lot of credit for being willing to speak so openly about his brother’s passing, given how recent the death still is.

No matter how much time passes, Kyle’s passing has left an unfillable void within the sport.

Clancy “believed her children would be miserable. And she couldn’t imagine them continuing to exist and have a decent life without her being there as a mother,” Resnick said.

“So in that sense, she did what she believed was morally right, even though she understood that ordinarily killing a child is against the law, she believed that she was doing what was right for her children with her distorted psychotic symptoms and her children’s need for her.”

Kim Zolciak and Kroy Biermann's teenage son is in police custody for alleged aggravated sodomy and aggravated sexual battery after a girl claimed he assaulted her inside a gym changing area ... TMZ has learned.

According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, an officer was dispatched to North Fulton Hospital on April 24, 2026, for a reported sexual assault.

Police say the alleged victim -- a teenage classmate of Kroy and Kim's son -- and her father claimed the incident occurred one day earlier inside a nearby gym.

Cops say the girl told them she was hanging out at the gym when she saw her friend, Kroy Biermann Jr., and they eventually went into a co-ed sauna.

In the police report, she claimed Kroy Jr. started to get touchy with her, and she told him no ... but he continued and, at one point, forced her mouth on his penis. She also alleges he digitally penetrated her vagina.

Police launched an investigation, and an officer says he began attempting to contact Kroy Sr. on May 14. The officer says he spoke with him on May 18, and Kroy Sr. said he would discuss the matter with Kim.

Kroy Jr. was arrested on August 17 and remains in custody.

The police report notes the alleged victim was examined at a hospital, and doctors did not find evidence of male DNA in her mouth or vagina.

We've reached out to Kim and Kroy for comment ... so far, no word back.

Waffle House tests unexpected new menu items as customers deliver mixed verdict

Waffle House is stepping outside its traditional breakfast offerings and testing seven taco varieties — but they're only available at select locations, for now.

"We are always looking to test new menu items, and tacos are delicious," a Waffle House spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The restaurant chain is testing the tacos for a limited time, while supplies last, at about 45 locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area, close to the Waffle House corporate offices.

The breakfast taco comes with egg and cheese and a choice of bacon, sausage, chicken sausage or ham.

The lunch and dinner tacos include a cheesesteak melt, chicken melt or patty melt.

All taco options are available at any time of day.

"It has only been a week, but the early feedback has been positive," Waffle House's spokesperson said.

Social media reaction is mixed.

"I bet they're fire too," an Instagram user commented on a post announcing the tacos' debut.

"We're about to witness the downfall of Waffle House with this foolishness," someone else wrote.

Another person commented that the tacos are "unnecessary," while another Reddit user remarked that with the addition of tortillas, Waffle House would already have the other ingredients on hand to make the tacos.

"I'm all for it as long as it's tacos containing current Waffle House foods," wrote another person. "Basic breakfast tacos would be incredible. But if I'm wanting real tacos, it's not gonna be WH."

Best known for its waffles, breakfast plates and signature hash browns — which can be ordered "scattered," "smothered," "covered" and more depending on preparation and toppings — Waffle House has tested several new products in recent years.

Earlier this year, the diner rolled out the Fiesta Chicken Protein Bowl, promoting the dish's 52 grams of protein. The item contains three scrambled eggs, two slices of cheese and one grilled chicken breast.

Walmart is giving shoppers something they've wanted for years: Apple Pay

Walmart shoppers can now worry less about forgetting their wallets in the car.

The company said Friday that it will begin adding tap-to-pay options to its checkout stations at US stores and Sam's Club warehouses, starting August 24 through the remainder of the year. Fuel stations will be upgraded by mid-2027.

This means that shoppers can now use their "eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch," and a spokesperson confirmed this includes options like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Walmart has long been a holdout to NFC-based payments, opting instead for its proprietary Walmart Pay app and Scan and Go app features for contactless payments.

The issue went viral last year when YouTuber MrBeast was flummoxed by the lack of a tap option.

"Younger consumers in particular are so used to using Apple Pay and tap-to-pay with their phones that they're coming to expect it," Emarketer principal retail analyst Sky Canaves told Business Insider at the time. (Emarketer is owned by Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company.)

Now it looks like Walmart has had a change of heart.

"It all comes back to giving customers and members more choice and making everyday shopping a little easier," the company said.

Disney has sealed a pact with Burbank-based content creator Dhar Mann Studios to create new youth- and family-oriented programming for its platforms, the companies announced Friday. The deal kicks off with a 20-episode order on series produced by Dhar Mann Studios for Disney; further details were not revealed.

“Dhar has built a distinctive voice and an enormous global following, with stories that are uniquely his own,” said Asad Ayaz, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer, The Walt Disney Company, and Debra OConnell, Chairman, Disney Entertainment Television, in a joint statement. “He and his team have forged an extraordinary connection with their audience, and we believe their optimistic, deeply relatable storytelling will connect in a meaningful way with Disney fans.”

Dhar Mann Studios said that it attracts more than 170 million followers globally and nearly 300 million views each week across platforms, with programming that it describes as “uplifting, relatable stories rooted in universal experiences.”

“For me, this is so much bigger than a content deal,” said Dhar Mann, founder of Dhar Mann Studios, in a statement. “I grew up with Disney stories. Now I get to experience that same magic through the eyes of my own family, and the idea that we now have the opportunity to create stories for Disney for the next generation is incredibly meaningful to me.”

The companies said more details about the 20-episode order will be announced at a later time.

Dhar Mann Studios is based in a three-stage, 125,000 square-foot production studio in Burbank, not far from The Walt Disney Co. headquarters. Dhar Mann Studios’ other partnerships include deals with brands like Adobe, the NFL and Gap. The company also produces original programming for Samsung TV Plus, where Dhar operates a FAST channel (which was the platform’s first creator-led original content deal) and a global vertical video slate with Fox Entertainment.

“We’ve spent years building a direct relationship with our audiences and learning what makes them laugh, cry, share and, most importantly, feel seen,” Mann added in his statement. “Disney has spent generations creating stories and characters that become part of people’s lives. Bringing those two worlds together gives us an opportunity to dream much bigger about what these stories can become, where they can go and how many people they can impact.”

David Hackl (“Saw V,” “Dangerous”) is set to direct the neo-noir action thriller “Solar Storm” for Pelican Pictures, from a script by Joe Rabl. Jack Hudson (“The Devil’s Train”) stars and produces opposite Lorena Andrea (“Warrior Nun”).

Unfolding over a single catastrophic day, “Solar Storm” follows Joe (Hudson), an ex-convict fighting to leave his past behind, whose path collides with Jasmine (Andrea), a woman desperate to escape a brutal marriage. When the largest solar storm in recorded history knocks out power, communications and order across the city, blackouts spiral into looting and riots. As the line between predator and prey burns away, the two go on the run through 24 hours of darkness — hunted by forces that may prove more dangerous than the storm overhead.

“Joe is a man who’s done everything to leave his past behind, only to have the world itself collapse around him,” Hudson said. “The solar storm doesn’t just take the lights out — it strips people down to who they really are. David knows how to make that kind of tension relentless and cinematic. That’s the movie I wanted to make.”

The cast also includes Massi Furlan (“Jumanji: The Next Level”), Valerie Huber (“Whiskey Cavalier”) and Werner Daehn (“The Lives of Others”) with additional casting underway on the remaining major roles.

Producers include Hudson, Joe Rabl of Pelican Pictures and Walter Mair (“Liaison”) of Trigger Films, with Reinhard Besser (“The Ledge”) executive producing. Trigger Films is anchoring the financing, providing the U.K. tax credit and GAP financing. Mair will also compose the score.

Behind the camera, the crew includes line producer Yanko Ushatov (“The Expendables”), stunt coordinator Rok Cvetkov (“Schindler’s List”), second unit director Alex Cvetkov (“SAS: Rogue Heroes”), aerial coordinator and helicopter stunt pilot Frédéric North (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) and animal coordinator Andrew Simpson (“Fallout”).

“I wrote Solar Storm as a pure pressure cooker,” added Rabl. “One day. No power. No rules. Two people who need each other to survive. The storm outside is nothing compared to what’s happening inside these characters.”

Principal photography is set to begin winter 2026 in Bulgaria on a budget of approximately €15 million.

Sal Frelick's return to the Milwaukee Brewers is imminent.

Frelick has been on a minor league rehab assignment since Aug. 8. Brewers manager Pat Murphy has already insinuated that Frelick is close, but Milwaukee is trying to make sure he's full-go when he's activated.

The 26-year-old has been hot down in Triple-A. He's played in nine games so far and is slashing .281/.410/.563 with a .973 OPS, two home runs, five RBIs, five walks, three doubles and seven runs scored.

Frelick is close to a return. If he uses the entire 20-day minor league rehab assignment, the latest we could see him in the majors would be in just about one week. We're on Frelick watch and could see him get activated really at any point right now.

When the Brewers do activate Frelick, they're going to obviously have to make a change on the big league roster. At this point, there's an obvious candidate to come off the roster for Frelick: Jonathan Ornelas.

Ornelas has played in three games for the Brewers since coming over from the Athletics. He's been a solid depth piece. But, again, he would be the most obvious guy to come off the roster to add Frelick back.

Ornelas' first game with Milwaukee came on Aug. 15 and he's slashing .222/.222/.222 in three games. He has played second base for Milwaukee, but Brice Turang is back, so the Brewers don't need a second baseman. Ornelas can play all over. Throughout his career to this point, he's gotten time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field and center field. He's a good guy to have in the organization, but the Brewers will be all set when Frelick returns. Plus, Cooper Pratt already has returned from the Injured List.

When Frelick returns, the Brewers are going to have positional decisions to make. He has gotten his time this year in right field. Before this season, Frelick was used as a utility man. The Brewers are going to have to find a way to integrate him into the mix with Luis Lara, Jackson Chourio and Garrett Mitchell all also getting time in the outfield. Plus, Jake Bauers has gotten time in the outfield as well.

If the Brewers were to use Frelick in a utility role again, they could put him at third base. Right now, David Hamilton and Joey Ortiz have been getting all the time at the hot corner. Ortiz has been great recently.

Milwaukee will have to determine how to use Frelick, but regardless, his time is coming. The most obvious guy who will be impacted by this move is Ornelas.

Where Rangers Can Go from Here After Jack Leiter’s Latest Rehab Start

Jack Leiter fell a bit short of one goal on Thursday. The rest of the evening was a bit harder to deal with.

The injured Texas Rangers right-hander made his second rehab start on Thursday with Double-A Frisco and the hope was that he would reach up to 65 pitches. He came close, throwing 59.

But, in the process, he was only able to pitch three innings, giving up three hits and five runs (four of which were earned) against the Wichita Wind Surge. He also struck out five and walked two, plus allowed a home run.

So where do he and the Rangers go from here?

Leiter scaffolded 11 pitches from his first rehab start to his second, as he threw 48 pitches last week with Triple-A Round Rock. But the line score numbers with better with the Express. He gave up one hit, one walk and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Texas must reconcile the pitch could with what he did on the mound on Thursday. He wasn’t nearly as effective as he was in his first start. Was Leiter working through how to command his pitches after the layoff or was he dealing with command issues that could be a problem in the Majors?

That could determine what the Rangers do next. Major League teams usually want their starting pitchers to reach 75 pitches on a rehab assignment before considering activation. Leiter is 16 pitches away. With Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list, the Rangers may want to get Leiter back in the rotation next week once he’s rested. He may be built up enough to give them four, maybe five innings.

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young also floated the idea of adding Leiter to the bullpen — but that was before his rehab began and right after Eovaldi went on the injured list. Texas has Jordan Montgomery to back-fill into the rotation but hasn’t been effective enough to usurp Cody Bradford, who took a spot in the rotation after Eovaldi’s injury.

Whatever the Rangers do with Leiter, they won’t do it until next week. He’ll need several days after the start to rest. If Texas wanted to activate him on normal rest, the earliest he could pitch would be Tuesday.

Leiter was 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA in 15 games before he had ankle surgery to remove an extraneous bond that had bothered him all season, to the point where he was altering lower body mechanics to compensate.

The Florida State Seminoles are nearing the end of their offseason with eight days to go until they kick off against New Mexico State.

Through spring practice, summer workouts, and 17 fall practices, the roster has taken shape while several Seminoles have improved their stock during the dog days of fall camp.

Some capitalized on fresh opportunities, while others earned repeated praise from head coach Mike Norvell or emerged as potential contributors at positions of need. With Saturday’s mock game marking the final step before official game-week preparation begins, four players stand out as FSU’s biggest offseason winners.

Jasen Lopez Has Been Hard to Ignore

FSU's coaches have been careful not to place excessive expectations on Lopez before his freshman debut, but the former two-sport standout has made that increasingly difficult throughout fall camp.

He has repeatedly drawn praise while competing for opportunities at receiver and punt returner, and will likely factor into what Florida State is trying to accomplish offensively.

The dual-sport freshman flashed after joining spring practice and carried that momentum into the preseason.

Norvell has praised the former four-star recruit and said that he is primed for “significant opportunities” this year.

“He’s a guy that doesn’t really act like a freshman,” Norvell said. “I’m not going to put him as a freshman player until he shows me that’s how he’s going to act.”

Lopez has also elevated himself in the punt-return competition. Special teams coordinator Adam Scheier said the freshman has demonstrated the “ability, confidence, and moxie” to handle the role, giving him another path onto the field immediately.

Chris Jones Has Set The Tone At Linebacker

Jones arrived at Florida State with proven production after leading the Sun Belt with 135 tackles at Southern Miss. His offseason success, however, has extended beyond the stat sheet. From spring practice through fall camp, the transfer has quickly established himself as one of the defense’s most physical players and a tone-setter in Ernie Sims’ linebacker room.

“Coach Sims says to set the tone, so I try to set the tone every day,” Jones said. “I just love being physical.”

Florida State has not publicly finalized its linebacker rotation, with Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, Mikai Gbayor, and Caleb LaVallee among the veterans competing for roles. Even in that crowded depth chart, Jones has consistently been one of the first players mentioned throughout camp.

An Accelerated Timeline For Marshall

Marshall appeared to be a developmental option when he arrived at Florida State during the summer. Ashton Daniels had already secured the starting job, while Kevin Sperry had an advantage after spending his first year in Norvell’s offense and participating throughout spring practice.

That quickly changed.

Despite missing the spring, the reigning NJCAA Division I Offensive Player of the Year has emerged as a legitimate contender with Sperry for the backup job.

“I’ve been really pleased with the way that he’s transitioned. He’s a really smart young man,” Norvell said during fall camp.

Ricky Knight III Has Worked His Way Into The Conversation

Florida State remains unsettled across portions of the secondary, but Knight has worked his way into the competition at cornerback. His opportunity may be partly circumstantial. Still, circumstance alone does not explain why Norvell has repeatedly mentioned him.

The former blue-chip prospect appeared in only seven games last season and entered fall camp without an obvious place in Florida State’s defensive-back rotation.

Karson Hobbs’ absence has forced Florida State to experiment with different personnel combinations in the secondary.

“A guy that I’ve really been pleased with and will probably get a little bit more of a look is Ricky Knight.”

Saturday will provide another opportunity for roles to shift before Florida State begins preparing for New Mexico State. Regardless of how the remaining competitions unfold, Lopez, Jones, Marshall, and Knight will enter the season in a far different light than when 2026 began.

Russell on pole position for Dutch GP sprint race

Mercedes' George Russell took his first pole position for four races in qualifying for the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Briton, trailing Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli by 59 points in the championship, was 0.041 seconds quicker than McLaren's Lando Norris in second.

Antonelli could manage only fifth, behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was sixth, ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who is second in the championship, 50 points behind Antonelli.

Russell's pole was the perfect start to the second part of the season for him, having lost ground to Antonelli in the three races before the summer break after his victory in Austria at the end of June.

The Briton said: "It has been a tough end to the first part of the year so I am really happy to be back.

"The lap felt really good. It is always difficult in sprint qualifying because we have just a lap to put it together, but it all came together nicely."

Russell was 0.227secs quicker than Antonelli and has an opportunity in Saturday's shorter sprint race - which runs to about a third of the distance of a grand prix - to cut back into the Italian's points advantage.

Behind the leading drivers from the top teams, Pierre Gasly was a strong eighth in an Alpine running the team's first major aerodynamic upgrade for some time, ahead of Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad.

Liam Lawson, subbing at Red Bull for Isack Hadjar after the Frenchman broke his wrist boxing, was 11th.

Much attention before the session was focused on Aston Martin, who are running a redesigned Honda engine.

The team's performance had been encouraging in practice earlier on Friday, when the engine seemed to be giving the expected performance uplift of about 0.3-0.5secs a lap.

But its performance was impossible to divine in qualifying because the straight-line mode - which opens the front and rear wings to reduce drag - was not working on Fernando Alonso's car.

The veteran Spaniard - who also lost one lap when he locked his tyres into the first corner, which he said was caused by an engine issue - was last.

"A little bit of everything in qualifying," said Alonso, who is yet to make a decision on his future in F1 beyond the end of this year.

"Free practice was more or less OK, but we had problems with the engine driveability. It was pushing on the braking so it was difficult to stop the car.

"And the apparently the SLM [straight line mode] did not work for me so I could not open the rear wing. A combination of both made the laps very tricky."

His team-mate Lance Stroll could manage only 19th place.

NCAA wins Tenth Circuit 'stay', but faces more eligibility lawsuits from 2022 class athletes in chaotic time

The chaotic off-season in college football has continued to play out in court rooms across the country, as athletes are suing the NCAA on a daily basis pertaining to their eligibility as part of the 2022 class.

When the NCAA released a statement last week harping on its decision to not grant a blanket-waiver to members of the 2022 class that were left out of conversation regarding the new 'five-for-five' eligibility guidelines, the floodgates were opened for athletes who felt as though they were being kicked to the curb.

NFL To NCAA? Courtroom Chaos Is Giving Pro Athletes A Bizarre Path Back To College, And It's Only Just Begun

On Friday morning, the Tenth Circuit court granted the NCAA its motion for a 'stay', which puts a pause on athletes using the blanket waiver granted by Judge Sweeney to athletes from the 2022 class that had a year of eligibility left.

Although this puts a little bit of the chaos on hold, there will now be a further influx of lawsuits filed in state court, who have been presenting different arguments in their filings.

NCAA IGNORED THE WARNINGS. NOW IT'S FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL IN COURTROOMS ACROSS AMERICA OVER ELIGIBILITY

While the NCAA should see this as a win, the cases against them will only increase from here, now that we have witnessed plaintiffs winning more often at the lower levels.

Those same athletes who were being denied an extra season of competition, based on the NCAA's decision to exclude them, began filing lawsuits in courtrooms from California to South Carolina, arguing they should receive the same benefits as those covered under the new eligibility structure.

NCAA ROCKED BY COLORADO JUDGE'S 2022 CLASS ELIGIBILITY RULING THAT COULD RESHAPE COLLEGE SPORTS THIS YEAR

And from what we've seen from injunctions and temporary restraining orders being granted on what has felt like a daily basis, a very large number of judges are in agreement with the athletes who have decided to fight the NCAA in a court of law.

NFL to NCAA, the plaintiffs are winning in lower courts

One of the latest wrinkles came on Wednesday, when the 19th District Court of Louisiana granted a TRO to a plethora of athletes who filed the same lawsuit that judges in other states have been ruling on over the past two months.

In the ruling, it allows for plaintiffs to return to college from the NFL, if they do so before a Sept. 1 deadline. But, in this case, only the athletes who were part of the lawsuit can take advantage of a seven-day transfer portal window ordered by the court.

Yes, there are players who are currently in NFL camps that were part of this lawsuit, and technically have the court’s blessing to return for another season of college football. No, you aren’t going crazy, this is actually taking place.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS FINALLY BACK AFTER MONTHS OF NCAA LAWSUITS, NIL DRAMA AND CONGRESSIONAL FIGHTS

In response to the latest ruling, NCAA Vice President Tim Buckley released the following statement, taking aim at the courts granting these orders, along with the lawyers filing them.

"Courts across the country granting relief to ineligible athletes who already had every opportunity to compete in college — sometimes without even having a hearing — are failing to appreciate the destabilizing effect their rulings are having on college sports," Buckley said. "The lawyers bringing these cases seemingly won't be satisfied until every professional athlete can treat college sports as a fallback option, regardless of the opportunities it strips from those who will never have a chance to begin their collegiate sports experience."

While there are plenty of people who agree with the NCAA's stance regarding athletes trying to get out of an NFL contract to return for one more season of college ball, this still falls on the organization who decided to exclude the 2022 class from their new guidelines.

For that, even though this has turned into something out of a John Grisham novel, it's hard for the NCAA to garner empathy.

Tenth Circuit Court decision now throws a wrinkle into everything

When U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney of Colorado granted a class-wide blanket waiver for athletes in the 2022 class, by way of an injunction, the entire college athletics world started scrambling for answers.

Would a school decide it was in their best interest to bring an athlete back, just days before the college football season is set to begin?

Well, that hasn’t been a problem for some schools, like Indiana. If there is a spot available, programs are going to use it.

They all knew that the entire ordeal could come to an end if the NCAA won their motion for a 'stay' while the Tenth Circuit court dealt with the appeal filed by the organization.

What will be below the ballroom is best left undisclosed. The Pentagon and the Secret Service will go to great lengths to shield from satellites and conventional spyware that will be on the roof of the ballroom.

But it should go without saying that the White House is much more than the Executive Mansion. It is the Commander-in-Chief’s principal command center as well as his home. It is also a target for every terrorist and lunatic in the world and the state sponsors of such would-be assassins.

The Constitution's grant to the President of the power of Commander-in-Chief implies many other powers, but basic among them is the headquarters from which to operate and the security arrangements to protect it. In this era of extremely advanced surveillance equipment, the entire White House complex has to be hardened against prying eyes. It must be made defensible against all manner of attacks. And should the worst-case scenario develop, it must have rooms from which continuity of government will be assured.

We are in the age of hypersonic missiles. Did any level of review by the court pause to consider the threat matrix at the center of which the Oval Office must be found? Was expert testimony collected on how long it would take to get the president and Vice President to the famed "secure undisclosed location?"

As we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the justices of the Supreme Court should be taking judicial notice of the world as it is. 25 years ago, then Vice President Cheney was rushed from his West Wing office to where, exactly? The White House Mess? The Red Room? The Vice President was taken to an undisclosed location in the compound that I’m still not at liberty to discuss.

The Supreme Court has many excellent reasons to deny the plaintiff standing. The Department of Justice has laid them out.

But the beating heart of this case is the beating heart of this president and all future presidents. There won’t be time some day to chopper away on Marine One. The President down the road is going to have to shelter in place. What a tragedy for this country if efforts to secure our most sensitive building are hampered by architectural enthusiasts and judges with expansive views and long experience on the judicial doctrine of "standing" and de minimis views and experience on often the need to instantly move the president, vice president, families and closest aides to secure locations.

The former pro boxer went on to thank her fans, friends, and everyone who has reached out to him during this difficult time, adding ... "At a time filled with so much sadness, your kindness has reminded me that there is still so much good in humanity."

As we reported, Hayden died Sunday in South Carolina after a possible overdose. Medics were called to the apartment she was staying at with her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, but she unfortunately could not be saved.

Bookstores might seem old school in the AI era, but Barnes & Noble has staged a fairy-tale comeback under CEO James Daunt.

After shrinking to under 600 locations in 2023, the storied American bookstore chain opened 57 locations in 2024 — more than in the entire decade between 2009 and 2019.

It expanded by more than 60 stores last year, and it's targeting another 60 this year, it said in a news release this week.

Barnes & Noble was taken private in August 2019 when Elliott Management acquired it for close to $700 million, including debt. The hedge fund tasked Daunt — who led the turnaround of British bookstore chain Waterstones, which Elliott acquired in 2018 — to revitalize Barnes & Noble as well.

Daunt explained how he turned the page at Barnes & Noble during the latest episode of the "Masters of Scale" podcast. Here are the key insights from the conversation.

Culture change

Daunt said Barnes & Noble had the same core problem as Waterstones: its bookstores "weren't very good."

He said that for booksellers, attention to detail, presentation, service, assortment, inventory, and judgment all matter. Steadily improving those things year after year has been key to his success, he said.

But Daunt said another key plank of his strategy has been to shift away from centralized control of stores, and put local booksellers in charge instead.

"Almost everything I do is about flattening those hierarchies, and then trying to introduce collective responsibility amongst the team once you've done that," he said.

When each store's team is running the show, that's a "much nicer way to work, much more engaging and much more empowering, and all of those good things," he said.

"But it's so much more difficult that often people resist it: 'We'd rather have the hierarchy, just tell me what to do, please.'"

Daunt said that changing a company's culture takes time, and it's like "stretching a rubber band. The minute you relax, it just pops back."

Data danger

Daunt — who built his own independent bookstore chain, Daunt Books, before taking charge of Waterstones in 2011 — said that store data can be more of a curse than a blessing.

"The data can occasionally be an interesting reference point, but it's the judgments you make almost in defiance of the data that will give you an inspiring store," he said.

As data is often held centrally, relying on it can unlock a "Pandora's box" where it's used to "impose uniformity on the stores, and that really is the death knell for us," he said.

Setting aside the data "empowers the local stores to really start interrogating how they're engaging with their customer base," and to rely on their "gut instinct" when merchandising, he said.

He gave the example of a data-driven store allocating too much shelf space to board books, overwhelming parents whose young kids would happily read the same titles again and again, while not giving preteen readers the large array of books they want.

Daunt also noted that "booksellers and numbers tend to be sitting in opposite corners of the room."

"We are the nerds who read all our books, and when we got to the maths and science, just gave up," he quipped.

Forgetting mistakes

Daunt said that a key element of his approach — which has clear parallels to Warren Buffett's model of decentralized autonomy at Berkshire Hathaway — is moving on when mistakes get made.

Instead of scrutinizing and punishing errors, he prefers to "not look in the rear-view mirror," say something was "idiotic," and move on.

He's found that this encourages junior employees to challenge decisions from higher up and frees senior staff to change their minds.

Spreading the word

Daunt said that Barnes & Noble has no marketing department and has "zero marketing dollars to spend."

"But what we do have is young booksellers," he said. "And again, this model of leaving stores to do what they want turns out to be fantastically adapted for the social media age."

Daunt hailed BookTok, the passionate community of readers on TikTok, as a powerful source of word-of-mouth recommendations.

"As long as we leave it to the kids with the blue hair, we'll be fine," he joked.

Daunt added that there's no need for a broader marketing push behind popular books.

"The booksellers are fantastically good at communicating within store to store," he said. "Books that start taking off in one store just sort of spread like a rash through the business," he continued, adding that the organic process has a valuable authenticity.

‘Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age’ Soundtrack Features New Music by Composers Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman

The soundtrack for Apple TV’s “Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age” has been released, featuring music by Hans Zimmer and fellow composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman.

The score was written by Zimmer, Talve and Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music and performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The trio are nominated in the Outstanding Music Composition For A Documentary/Nonfiction Or Reality Program (Original Dramatic Score) Emmy category.

For the series’ first two seasons, Zimmer, Talve and Rozman built an arsenal of custom instruments (Raptor Violin, HadroCello, Triceratone, FatRex) out of bones, fossils and dinosaur skull replicas, fusing them with a traditional ensemble to reflect the Mesozoic Era.

To capture the Ice Age era, the trio used instruments including the Divje Babe flute, which was discovered in 1995 at the Divje Babe archeological site in Slovenia. It’s a bear femur with holes, thought be a Paleolithic instrument. “Our friend has a replica. We went into the caverns of the Postojna Cave [in Slovenia] and recorded it,” said Rozman. “It’s a very eerie sound that immediately transports the listener back in time.”

For the score’s heavier and darker sound, the team removed high flutes, violins and brass. The composers also try to bring something unique to their scoring process. “We had a wall of cellos in a semicircle and double basses. We recorded an octobass, which is a huge double bass,” Rozman said.

The instrument was so big that the player needed to stand on a stool to play it. Rozman said, “That gave us the rumbly, low feeling for the mammoths. The sounds of the terror bird (phorusrhacids) was based on a prototype, which was modeled on the larynx of an extinct terror bird species. But they took it to the next level, and the Triceratone was born, a wind instrument that created the guttural sound needed for the bird.

For the rumbling weight of woolly mammoths, they utilized an Octobass; a massive 12-foot double bass generating subsonic 16 Hz frequencies. Paired with a low-register orchestra, it created an ancient, earth-shaking sonic mass.

“We have always approached ‘Prehistoric Planet’ by asking how we can create sounds that feel like they’re transporting the listener back in time” said Zimmer, Talve and Rozman. “For ‘Ice Age,’ we built the score around a darker, more orchestral palette and continued experimenting with custom and ancient instruments to give the creatures and landscapes their own musical identity.”

The album continues a long-running collaboration between the three composers. Talve and Rozman; both composers at the Zimmer-founded collective Bleeding Fingers Music, have scored all three installments of ” Prehistoric Planet” alongside Zimmer.

Currently, Zimmer, Talve and Rozman are writing the original score for HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series.

Seth Rogen, Colman Domingo, Danny Boyle Join Speakers Lineup at Toronto Market Summit

The Toronto Intl. Film Festival’s Market, which runs Sept. 10-16, has added Seth Rogen, Colman Domingo and Danny Boyle to its list of speakers.

The industry program, known as TIFF: The Market, has finalized its lineup and schedule of its conference program, the Summit, which has more than 70 sessions.

Rogen and Boyle join The Visionaries strand, which features moderated conversations with “leading creators, executives and innovators forging unique paths in the global screen sector.”

Rogen stars in two films at the festival: “Babies,” directed by Lauren Miller Rogen, and “Tangles,” an animated film that Rogen and Miller Rogen produced. Rogen will discuss these two films as well as his other projects, including “The Studio’s” upcoming Season 2.

Boyle will reflect on his career and talk about his new feature, “Ink,” which opens Venice.

Previously announced headliners include actor Gary Oldman, director Lee Chang-dong and producer Robbie Brenner.

Another stand, Dialogues, features moderated conversations between writers, directors, screenwriters and producers that “focus on the nuances of their craft.” Speakers include Hirokazu Kore-eda (“Look Back”) and Yeon Sang-ho (“Train to Busan”). Other speakers include Kat Sandler, Rick Hansen, Amber Midthunder, Broderick Johnson, Brad Kane and Cody Lightning. Previously announced headliners are Pam Abdy, Mike De Luca, Curry Barker and Inde Navarrette.

The Perspectives strand features moderated panel discussions on the state of the global screen industries. Speakers include Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar and Domingo, as well as Roeg Sutherland and Glen Basner.

Other speakers include Stephen Follows, Michael Dowse, Amanda Lebow, Moses Babatope and Nyla Innuksuk. The previously announced headliners are Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler.

“Our aim was to reflect the big questions and opportunities facing the industry,” said Charles Tremblay, head of TIFF: The Market. “Giving delegates the diverse perspectives they need to navigate the shifting global dynamics was also a key part of our strategy; we’re thrilled to see how well it’s all come together.”

Despite missing on Jaxon Kohler to BYU, Kansas has expressed interest in a new transfer portal big man this week.

One of the first players Kansas was linked to after the Colorado judge issued a preliminary injunction to Class of 2022 athletes was Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler. The stretch big man was considered a strong candidate to fill the Jayhawks' frontcourt needs as they navigate an uncertain situation at center.

Unfortunately, KU was unable to land the highly touted transfer. He committed to another Big 12 school yesterday, pledging to BYU for his final season of eligibility.

But on the same day Kohler became a Cougar, Kansas began showing interest in a new transfer. According to 247 Sports recruiting analyst Dushawn London, the program has reached out to Hamed Olayinka (better known as Larry) along with Ole Miss, USC and UAB.

A 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward, Olayinka has played at four schools in four years but was granted an additional season through the injunction. He's a lengthy forward who can impact the game on both ends of the floor.

He became a full-time starter for the first time in his career during the 2025-26 season at FIU, averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds across 32 starts. Olayinka is especially effective on the offensive glass, averaging 2.9 offensive rebounds per game and recording five double-doubles last year. At Utah Tech and Samford, he primarily played in a reserve role.

Olayinka has also averaged at least 1.2 blocks per game in every season he's played at the Division I level. KU could certainly use that type of rim protection with Flory Bidunga now at Louisville.

His connection to the state of Kansas dates back to the beginning of his collegiate playing days, when he starred at Garden City Community College approximately six hours west of Lawrence. He could join 1993 Final Four standout Darrin Hancock as players to transfer from Garden City to KU.

The Los Angeles native is a career 2-for-16 from beyond the arc, limiting his offensive game primarily to the inside. However, his defensive ability and rebounding would complement the rest of KU's roster nicely.

Although he certainly isn't as big of a name as Kohler, Olayinka would come at a considerably lower NIL cost while still providing an impact in the paint. KU fans should keep an eye on his recruitment to see whether he schedules a visit to Lawrence anytime soon.

Texas Longhorns Second Scrimmage Could Settle One Key Position

The Texas Longhorns are working through fall camp and are just a few weeks away from beginning a critical 2026 season where the program will look to right the wrongs of last year and find a way into the College Football Playoffs.

The roster is seemingly set for the season, while the depth chart still has a few positions in a heated battle during fall camp, looking to work themselves out over the remaining time left in fall camp.

With the second scrimmage on the horizon for the Longhorns, one key position battle in the safety room, pitting Kobe Black against Derek Williams, could find an early answer after the conclusion of the scrimmage, providing more insight into what the defense could look like in 2026.

Plenty of Experience With Either Option

The Longhorns are riddled with plenty of talent ahead of the 2026 season, with a roster rich in star power, and experience, a combination that has determined many of the past national champions over the sport's past.

Black and Williams both fall into that category, as they both return for their third and fourth seasons with the Longhorns, respectively. Over the past two seasons, they each have amassed a respectable stat sheet, with Black racking up 28 tackles and one interception, while Williams has 76 tackles and one interception.

Black is fighting for the safety spot while also managing a position change, having been a cornerback last season, but his play during fall camp, including from the first team scrimmage, has really impressed the coaching staff, including head coach Steve Sarkisian.

“I really think Kobe Black had a heck of a scrimmage at safety, and that was important for us because that’s been his first real live action of playing safety,” Sarkisain said.

Williams, on the other hand, was the projected starter in the safety role entering the year, but he also missed spring camp due to an injury he was recovering from. Ideally, the spot stays his, but continuing to show during the second scrimmage why he was the projected starter could make a big difference in how the depth chart finalizes.

If Black has another solid scrimmage, further showing he has improved his open-field tackling, something he didn't have to do much of as a corner, he could fight his way through the No. 1 role and earn his spot on the field.

The Colorado Avalanche Mount Rushmore: Which Four Legends Make the Cut?

Choosing four players to create a Colorado Avalanche Mount Rushmore sounds easy until you look at the names that have come through Denver since the team arrived from Quebec in 1995.

Joe Sakic, Patrick Roy, Peter Forsberg, Milan Hejduk, Gabriel Landeskog. Nathan MacKinnon. Cale Makar. Ray Bourque even had a few cups of coffee with the Avalanche before he rode off into the sunset with a Stanley Cup championship in 2001.

This isn't necessarily a ranking of the four most talented players to wear an Avalanche sweater. It's about production, championships, individual honors, longevity, and each player's importance to the identity of the franchise.

The conversation begins with the greatest player in the history of the franchise, Joe Sakic.

He played in 1,378 career games, while scoring 625 goals, 1,016 assists, and 1,625 points. He also scored 188 points in 172 career playoff games.

He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion and has a Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award (now the Ted Lindsay), and a Lady Byng Trophy to his credit. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

He is the franchise's all-time leader in nearly every offensive category, and he still holds the NHL record with eight career playoff overtime goals.

Sakic captained the Avalanche to their first Cup in 1996, and then went into the front office after retirement and constructed the team that won the third Cup in franchise history in 2002.

He has to be the first face carved into the mountain.

Patrick Roy: The Missing Piece

Colorado already had a good team when Patrick Roy was acquired from Montreal in December 1995. He took them from good to great.

Roy was the final piece to the puzzle as he helped backstop the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in a four-game sweep of the Florida Panthers in 1996.

He would win another Cup in 2001 and also take home the Conn Smythe Trophy the same year.

In a league that was dominated by Wayne Gretzky in the 1980s, Roy is the only player in league history to win the Conn Smythe three times, with two of those won in Montreal.

His career ended with 551 wins, four Stanley Cups, and three Vezina Trophies with the Canadiens. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.

The franchise eventually had to find another player capable of carrying the mantle that Sakic left behind. They got him number one overall in 2013 and Nathan MacKinnon has been nothing short of spectacular since his arrival.

If anything, he has just continued to get better. MacKinnon has now played in 950 career games, scored 420 goals, added 722 assists, and tallied 1,142 points. And he doesn't turn 31 until next month.

In 2025-26, he had 53 goals, 74 assists, and 127 points. He's won a Stanley Cup, a Calder Trophy, a Hart Trophy, a Lady Byng Trophy, and the Ted Lindsay Award. He also won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for last season's leading goal-scoring campaign.

MacKinnon isn't simply accumulating statistics. He was the offensive centerpiece that returned Colorado to the top in 2022. Unlike Sakic and Roy, MacKinnon's Avalanche resume is still being written.

Cale Makar: The Controversial Selection

The first three weren't particularly difficult. The fourth was. That's because Peter Forsberg has an outstanding argument.

But at the end of the day, Cale Makar took the final spot. He's won a Calder, a Stanley Cup, two Norris Trophies, and a Conn Smythe Trophy. This is all at the age of 27.

Makar wasn't simply part of Colorado's third championship, he was judged the most valuable player of the entire 2022 postseason.

Forsberg won two Stanley Cups, a Hart Trophy, and an Art Ross Trophy. He won the Calder when the team was still based in Quebec, but that didn't play a role in why he was left off Mount Rushmore. He has a monster resume.

There are five Mount Rushmore-worthy Avalanche players, and unfortunately, there are only four spots.

Makar who is arguably already the greatest defenseman in franchise history, was the MVP of a Stanley Cup run, and remains in the prime of a career that could eventually catapult him to being one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history.

Leaving Peter Forsberg off an Avalanche Mount Rushmore feels wrong. The problem is that leaving any of the other four off feels even more wrong.

You've got Sakic, the captain who defined the franchise. Roy is the goaltender who helped turn Colorado into an immediate champion. MacKinnon is the superstar who led the franchise's second great era. Then there's Makar, the generational defenseman who helped bring the Cup back to Denver. Two of the four faces are still playing.

MacKinnon and Makar can still add Cups, awards, records, and years to their already impressive resumes. So in the end, it might become less about whether they belong and more about whose place becomes vulnerable next.

The 24-hour American diner is vanishing — here’s what’s driving the decline

As more diners end 24-hour service, a handful have managed to keep the tradition alive, keeping their lights and griddles on around the clock.

The original Red Arrow Diner opened its doors in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1922. Over the decades, the business expanded, changed ownership, and moved locations.

Currently, the historic diner is the flagship of four Red Arrow Diners in the state, co-owned by Amanda Wihby and George Lawrence.

All four restaurants are open 24/7. During the overnight hours, between midnight and 5 a.m., the diners attract a mixed crowd, Wihby said.

“It could just be a regular who has nowhere else to go and wants to come in for a warm cup of coffee and a smile and maybe sit back and watch some of the entertainment that happens,” she said.

“You have your first responders and people coming off [the] third shift, travelers, and, of course, there are the people who are coming out of the bars. … It’s important for us to be here for them. And now that it’s becoming a rare thing to be [open] 24 hours for diners, I feel like it just makes the Red Arrow that [much more] special.”

Yelp data released in 2025 showed that 24/7 restaurants are experiencing upheaval nationwide. The number of restaurants offering 24-hour service in the U.S. fell 11% between January 2020 and January 2025.

In Los Angeles, 29% of all-night restaurants closed, while Las Vegas saw 9% disappear, according to Yelp.

“A handful of cities are defying this downward trend,” Yelp reported, citing increases in places like Baltimore (14%), Salt Lake City (25%), and Key West, Florida (33%).

Labor shortages and changing customer behavior – including younger Americans choosing to drink less – have put a damper on the demand for a late-night meal, Yelp reported.

Cultural and economic challenges, including the pandemic’s lasting effects on sit-down restaurants and the role of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs in people’s eating habits, also play a part in the decline of 24/7 food service, Food & Wine reported.

Surveys also show that affordability concerns are prompting Americans to cut back on restaurant spending. Restaurant labor costs are also “well above historical averages,” 2026 data from the National Restaurant Association showed.

Nevertheless, the diner has always been “the focal part of the community,” Wihby said. During the pandemic, the owners had to close three of the four Red Arrow locations during the third shift.

“When the governor closed us down, we didn’t have keys,” Wihby recalled. “We had never closed the restaurants, so we were struggling to find the keys to lock the door.”

It took the owners a few years after the pandemic to get all four restaurants back to 24/7 service, but all locations are now open all day and night and are prospering, they said.

Navigating the pressures of inflation and societal changes is what Wihby said she and Lawrence do daily.

“We sit and find solutions and troubleshoot and find a way to squeeze out the bottom line wherever we can, but not by cutting our quality,” Wihby said.

Wihby credits Red Arrow’s employees and the diners’ “very loyal vendors” with helping them succeed.

One of the general managers, for instance, started with the business washing dishes as a teenager, worked his way up to a cook,” and now he’s got a family with kids, and he’s running our Londonderry location,” Wihby said.

Several other employees have also worked at the diners for more than 10 years.

“We are blessed to have the best employees in the business,” Wihby said.

“They know customers either by name or what they eat. Someone will walk in, and they’re like, ‘Oh, there’s a chicken-fried steak and sausage gravy,’ instead of their name. They banter with the customers and create memories. And that’s why people keep coming back.”

One famous regular was Hollywood star Adam Sandler’s father, Stan, who ate at the diner every Sunday. His regular order – eggs and bacon, panfries and toast – is on the Red Arrow menu as “Stan the Man,” named in his memory.

“During election time, most presidents [have come] in,” Lawrence said. “That was very exciting.”

It has endured by serving consistently good food at reasonable prices and offering a welcoming environment, Wihby and Lawrence said.

“I could be sitting here next to the governor on one side and maybe a nurse or someone in construction on the other side,” Wihby said.

“We cater to all walks of life. There is a seat for everybody at the counter. And what’s more American than that? I think that tradition is important, and I think it’ll stay alive.”

US President Donald Trump may have instigated the disagreement when he posted a map on Tuesday that labeled the Strait of Hormuz as “new U.S. territory.”

“Persian Gulf” has been the most common nomenclature to describe the Middle Eastern body of water, which is technically a sea of the Indian Ocean, for centuries.

Many Arab countries began to prefer using the term “Arabian Gulf” after the rise of Arab independence movements in the early 20th century.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office in May 2025 that he was considering using the Arab convention ahead of a trip to Saudi Arabia.

Iran’s consulate in Najaf responded to al-Halbousi’s post with photos from an Iraqi government geographical guide from 1936 that labeled the body as the “Persian Gulf.”

Eye drops recalled over possible contamination, FDA reports

The Food and Drug Administration reported that bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief have been voluntarily recalled over potential contamination.

According to the FDA notice, the 0.5-fluid-ounce bottles were distributed nationwide by Medtech Products, which is owned by Prestige Consumer Healthcare in New York. Prestige didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

There haven’t been reports of injuries from using the eye drops.

The eye drops are sold over the counter nationwide at major retailers, including CVS and Walmart.

The 39,060 recalled products were labeled Lot 2552A, with a recall number of D-0766-2026 and expiration date of Sept. 30, 2027. The recall began July 29 and is ongoing.

The FDA notice listed the recall as Class II, meaning there may be temporary or medically reversible health problems. The reason for the recall was “lack of assurance of sterility,” the notice said.

A former University of Kentucky student-athlete pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree manslaughter in the death of her infant son, whose body was found inside a trash bag in a closet.

Laken Snelling had initially pleaded not guilty after a grand jury indicted her on several charges, including first-degree manslaughter, abuse of corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.

Snelling, 22, changed her plea to guilty on Friday, NBC affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky, WLEX reported.

Officers responded to a residence on Aug. 27 for a report of an unresponsive infant, according to a press release from the city of Lexington.

The Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office determined the baby was born alive and his cause of death to be “asphyxia by undetermined means.”

Police said Snelling hid her dead infant, found wrapped in a towel, inside a black trash bag in a closet.

The former member of the university’s STUNT team allegedly told police that she tried to conceal the evidence of giving birth from her roommates, a police citation stated.

As for Hayden's relationship with her ex, Brian Hickerson -- which sources told us kept on going behind the scenes for years so as not to screw with Hayden's public image -- Gayle says she isn't surprised by the news ... one read of Hayden's book, and it's obvious she still had a connection to the guy.

As you know ... Hayden was found unresponsive inside a South Carolina residence earlier this week while Brian slept in the other room. First responders attempted to resuscitate her but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, who have been married for 30 years, are urging people to avoid having a big wedding.

"Weddings are having a micro trend in 2026," Ripa said in a prerecorded segment that aired Thursday, according to People magazine. "Live with Kelly and Mark" is currently on summer break, with live episodes returning after Labor Day.

"Tiny. A quirky cake. No big ceremony. Candles over flowers. Cost-effectiveness. This is the year of the cost-effective wedding. Ceremonies are out, parties are in," Ripa said.

It never made sense to me, which is why we eloped. At the time, it didn’t make sense to either one of us. We’re like, ‘That’s ridiculous.’"

In June, Ripa revealed her only regret from their inexpensive wedding.

While the play on the diamond has been particularly tough to watch, the lone constant that everyone can rely on is the ballpark food, which one furry fan found to be the case when the Mets took on the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

A video captured by fan Scott Reynolds shows a stealthy raccoon grabbing leftover concession stand food from a hole in the bleachers at Citi Field.

It starts with broken peanut shells discarded by fans until a group notices the distinct paw reaching up through the opening.

Reynolds said that he and his family were eating peanuts and dropping the shells in the stands when they noticed a paw appearing from a small hole in the concrete.

"We soon realized that it was a raccoon," Reynolds said. "We laughed and enjoyed the extra show."

"Extra show" might be underselling it a little bit, as most Mets fans would argue the 30-second clip of the ballpark scavenger is probably more entertaining than anything the team has put on the field so far this season.

Why Anthropic’s AI watermark is going further than its rivals — for now

Anthropic's new watermark for AI-generated text struck a nerve for some Claude users — but did Europe's laws require it to go as far as it did?

A Business Insider review of the law, supported by interviews with AI and policy experts, suggests Anthropic's approach may go beyond what the EU requires.

Under the European Union's Article 50(2), AI companies do not have to mark AI outputs when the technology is used for standard editing or does not substantially change a user's original words or meaning.

Anthropic's watermark, which is designed to remain detectable when text is copied and pasted, can appear in translations, summaries, and more extensively edited text.

"Basically, Article 50 called for a scalpel to catch deepfakes and mass synthetic generation, but Anthropic is using a sledgehammer that hits simple proofreading and translation," Caroline De Cock, senior fellow at the Lisbon Council think tank and head of research at the Information Labs, told Business Insider.

Anthropic has said it is introducing the watermark to comply with the EU's AI Act and that it's rolling it out globally because it does not have a way to apply it on a per-region basis.

While some have welcomed the transparency that AI watermarks can bring, Anthropic's announcement also triggered a wave of backlash. Some Claude users said they canceled their subscriptions, and developers have created new tools to remove the watermarks.

A recurring concern is that the watermark could be interpreted as indicating that Claude wrote the text, even if only used for editing or proofreading.

This is due to the technical approach behind Anthropic's watermark: it guides Claude's word choices to create a detectable pattern, indicating that the chatbot was likely involved in writing the text.

Lighter editing with Claude is less likely to trigger the watermark, an Anthropic spokesperson told Business Insider, because "there's very little (if anything) for the watermark to attach to."

Milos Rusic, the cofounder and CEO of enterprise AI company Deepset, told Business Insider that Anthropic "is taking a somewhat broader interpretation" of the EU law. That's because there can be a "provenance signal" attached to Claude's word choices, even when it "did not originate the underlying idea or document," he said.

So, why might Anthropic choose this approach?

It's in line with Anthropic's "brand identity as a safety-first AI developer," De Cock said, adding that it could also reduce its regulatory risks by "shifting the burden of filtering and interpreting those labels entirely onto downstream users and external platforms."

An Anthropic spokesperson told Business Insider that it would "continue to evaluate different approaches."

A wave of AI watermarks

The EU's watermarking laws apply to new models launched in Europe on or after August 2. Older models have a grace period until December.

That means other tech companies operating on the continent will have to roll out their own machine-readable ways to detect AI-generated content in the coming months.

Some already have them.

Google said it uses its SynthID technology to invisibly watermark AI-generated text, images, audio, and video from its models worldwide.

OpenAI referred Business Insider to an FAQ saying it plans to expand its labels to text, but did not specify a date.

Meanwhile, Meta directed Business Insider to a July blog post about its work on practical, interoperable tools to identify AI-generated content. Meta has so far focused on images and has not provided details on a text-watermarking plan.

xAI did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The company tags some work as AI-generated, including, recently, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt's departure message on X. The tag later disappeared.

The coming wave of watermarks comes at a time when many companies have been encouraging their employees to use AI. Now, some people are worried about it being outed and their authorship of work being questioned.

"These systems can be useful evidence," Rusic said of watermarks, "but I would be very cautious about turning them into an automated judgment about authorship or misconduct."
