In a season in which a new injury issue seems to pop up every other day, the Arizona Diamondbacks have almost always been able to rely on penciling Nolan Arenado's name into the lineup card.

That the 35-year-old third baseman has been akin to an iron man this season obviously isn't ideal for the D'Backs. He entered Monday tied with Ketel Marte for the third-most played games among all Arizona players, behind Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo, which is admirable given his career mileage. Going back to his days with the St. Louis Cardinals, Arenado has never been known to willingly take days off.

Now, he might not have a choice.

Nolan Arenado #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks

Arenado left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves with torso discomfort, which he told MLB.com's Rick Farlow probably will necessitate an MRI before the Diamondbacks begin a series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday. If the MRI shows anything problematic, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo will lose one of the few players he hasn't had to check in with before putting him in the lineup.

"He's a very tough player," Lovullo told reporters, per Farlow. "Once we figure out what's going on, we'll hope it's the shortest time down."

Arenado has recovered from a dismal 2025 season, after which the Cardinals traded him to Arizona over the winter. By several measures, he's having his best season in years. He's on pace to hit the most home runs, doubles and RBI he has since 2023, and his .764 OPS is also his strongest since that season. It's a far cry from the .900-plus OPS with sterling defense he boasted in his prime, but it's been enough to keep the Diamondbacks on the fringes of the NL Wild Card battle.

If Arenado can't play through whatever is ailing him, then nobody could play through it. The question is, will the Diamondbacks be able to play through another injury to yet another of their regulars?
