Shining a spotlight on the ups and downs of musical fame, the hit television show Nashville drew a legion of fans during its six-season run and in the years that followed.
The country music drama series, which premiered in October 2012, followed a fictional collective of country music artists based in Nashville, Tennessee, and starred Connie Britton as superstar veteran Rayna Jaymes, Hayden Panettiere as talented up-and-comer Juliette Barnes, and Clare Bowen and Charles Esten as aspiring singer-songwriter Scarlett O’Connor and Rayna’s on-off love interest Deacon Claybourne, respectively.
While Rayna and Juliette’s fierce competitiveness saw the pair clash in the show’s early days, their dynamic slowly evolved into a complex tangle of mutual respect — albeit lingering rivalry — that won over fans who simply couldn’t get enough of Britton and Panettiere’s electric performances.
Nashville also attracted critical acclaim, scoring Britton a Golden Globe nomination in 2013 and Panettiere two Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014. The show also received an Emmy nomination in 2013 in the category of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song “A Life That’s Good,” which was played throughout the series.
After premiering on ABC, Nashville ran for four seasons before the network announced its cancellation. Due to the show’s cult following, it was resurrected by CMT in 2016 where two final seasons were played out, although Britton left the show during season 5.

Panettiere took a four-year break from acting following the end of Nashville in 2018. She returned to the spotlight in 2023 with a role in Scream VI, which saw her reprise her Scream 4 character Kirby Reed.
The actress released a May 2026 memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning which explained her four-year fame hiatus while opening up about her tumultuous childhood and traumatic shift into adulthood. She also starred in the psychological thriller Sleepwalker — which served as her last professional project.
Panettiere’s father, Skip, confirmed to Us on August 16, 2026, that his daughter died in Greenville, South Carolina, earlier that day. She was 36.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” Skip said in a statement at the time. “We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
A cause of death was not confirmed or made public at the time of publication.
Britton’s season 5 Nashville exit saw her jump into several successful television projects and Hollywood films. She starred as Debra Newell in Bravo’s 2018 true-crime anthology Dirty John, which earned her a 2019 Golden Globe nomination in the category of Best Performance by an Actress. She also scored a Critics’ Choice nomination that year.
She also appeared on the big screen in 2019 with a role in Bombshell opposite Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron, before appearing in 2020’s Promising Young Woman.
Returning to the small screen, Britton starred as Abby Clark in 9-1-1 until 2020 before moving on to The White Lotus as Nicole Mossbacher in 2021. More recently, she’s held TV roles in 2025’s Overcompensating and 2026’s Rooster.
In October 2025, Britton got engaged to producer David Windsor after dating for nearly six years, per a report by People at the time.

Clare Bowen
Australian-born Bowen took her character’s love for music off-screen during the filming of Nashville, simultaneously launching a musical career of her own through the TV series’ soundtracks.
She has since continued her musical career by forming the band Bowen*Young with her husband, fellow singer-songwriter Brandon Robert Young. The duo currently perform right around the world.
Esten continued his television career after his role on Nashville as Deacon Claybourne wrapped, appearing in a 2019 episode of the Apple TV horror series Tell Me a Story and four episodes of 2021’s Tell Me Your Secrets.
He then found a more permanent home with Outer Banks, where he portrayed Ward Cameron from 2020 to 2023. He more recently appeared in Homestead: The Series.
Esten told Us in 2019 that what he missed the most about Nashville was the people he worked with — as well as his own character.
“The fellow cast members and the amazing crew that all became such great friends and made that beautiful show happen,” he said at the time. “I’ll miss my friend Deacon as well. It was an honor and a real joy to play a guy with so much heart in the face of so much adversity. A guy who fought every day to be a better man than he had been before — all for the sake of the ones he loved so deeply.”
Jackson, who played Juliette’s husband Avery Barkley on Nashville, is arguably better known for his longtime role as Lucky Spencer on ABC’s General Hospital. As Lucky, whom he began portraying on the show in 1991, Jackson has won six Daytime Emmy awards.
Although his Nashville stint saw him juggle the two roles at once, Jackson did finally leave the soap in 2025 due to the extensive commute between his home in Tennessee and filming in California.
Today, he is focused on expanding his artistic pursuits after launching a debut poetry book in 2012. Subsequent books under the authorship Jonathan S. Jackson have since been released, with his most recent, The Eternal Poet and the Cosmic Drama, due out in September 2026.
Canadian-born child star Stella portrayed Daphne Conrad, the youngest daughter of Britton’s Rayna in Nashville. She has since moved her acting talents to the big screen , appearing on 2024’s My Old Ass alongside Aubrey Plaza. The role earned her a Critics’ Choice award for Best Young Performer.
More recently, Stella appears in The End of Oak Street as Audrey Platt opposite Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, who play her on-screen parents.
