Long Island’s game of the century lived up to the hype.

The impervious Massapequa Chiefs snapped Garden City’s nation-leading 68-game winning streak in a barn-burning battle that boiled down to last-minute heroics, sealing a fiery 21-14 victory in a matchup that Nassau County has talked about for months.

Deadlocked at 14, two Chiefs captains led Massapequa to victory. First defensive lineman Ryan Chabus intercepted a pass. Then senior wideout Dylan Milio hauled in a 29-yard touchdown catch with 30 seconds to go that was heard ’round the world — especially the raucous stands of Hofstra University.

“It was definitely one of the closest games we’ve ever played in,” Milio told The Post, adding that the end became a blur in a shaking college stadium with nearly 6,000 fans. “It meant a little more because now we could break history. In school, we were not really paying attention to teachers today, honestly.”

Dave Ettinger’s Garden City Trojans had not lost since 2019, a run that includes five straight Long Island championships. He was invited to Super Bowl 60 and named an NFL Coach of the Year.

Garden City, which has won 10 straight Nassau County titles, took a down-to-earth approach to the excitement even before the big game, which was pushed from Saturday to Monday due to the storm.

“Ultimately, our goal isn’t about winning this game — it’s about putting ourselves in position to win the last game of the year,” athletic director Ed Ramirez said last week.

The two powerhouses had never played due to being in separate conferences — Massapequa plays in the largest and Garden City at a smaller level — but finally faced off after a rule change allowed the highly anticipated crossover war on the gridiron.

The Chiefs also have had historic success, boasting what is now a 26-game winning streak and three consecutive Long Island championships at the highest conference level.

Chabus knew it would come down to whichever team forced an error at the end of the thriller.

“Give extended credit to them — they came out to play,” he said. “I knew I had to make a play. That’s what football players do. That’s what three-time Long Island champions do.”
