Klay Thompson had himself quite a day, first agreeing to a buyout with the Mavericks before reportedly agreeing to a two-year, nearly $13 million deal with the Heat.
It's disappointing for Warriors fans who have been wanting him back as the reality sets in that he might never play for the Dubs again.
But there's one other aspect of this move that is of interest to Warriors fans.
Thompson is now in a better position to win a fifth championship than Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are.
How Heat Compare to Warriors in Title Race
To be clear, the Heat aren't the Eastern Conference favorites. Most sportsbooks have the Knicks and 76ers as the front-runners with the Celtics, Cavaliers, Raptors, Pistons and Heat all mixed in after them.
But there's little doubt that Miami has a better chance to win it all than Golden State.
Some sportsbooks have the Heat as twice as likely to win it all than the Dubs. That about sums it up.
The Heat are missing a dynamic point guard, which could be their undoing in the playoffs, But they have everything else, including a superstar forward in Giannis Antetokounmpo, a star center in Bam Adebayo, a solid two-way wing in Andrew Wiggins, and shooters in Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bobby Portis.
If everything goes right for the Warriors, they could be in the same tier as the Heat, but there are enough ifs to fill an empty carton of eggs.
Among them are:
- If Jimmy Butler, 36, returns to form from his torn ACL
- If Kristaps Porzingis avoid many injury- and healthy-related absences
- If Curry, 38, fends off Father Time to remain an elite player
- If Curry avoids a major injury
- If Moses Moody returns to form from his patellar tendon tear
- If Green, 36, has one last impactful season left in him
- If Yaxel Lendeborg provides immediate impact as a rookie
There's a good chance of few of those things don't go their way, which could derail the season.
Klay Deserves Whatever Success Comes HIs Way
I'm sure I speak for all Warriors fans in that it would be weird watching Thompson win a title somewhere else.
But I hope it does happen.
It goes without saying that Thompson is a Warriors legend who played his heart out to help the team win four titles.
On top of that, his prime was cut way short due to terrible injury luck.
The fact that he's come back from two major injuries and averaged at least 2.9 three-pointers per game for the last five years speaks to his work ethic.
Who knows if the Heat have enough talent to get through the much more talented Eastern Conference, and if so, they'd likely have to beat the Spurs or Thunder from the West.
All I know for sure is if Miami needs a big shot, it will want Thompson taking it.
