Infielder Jon Berti, whose last major league game came with the Chicago Cubs in 2025, announced his retirement in an Instagram post Thursday, Aug. 20.

"After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from professional baseball," Berti wrote. "It’s been a hell of a journey, full of ups and downs. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that baseball has given me over the last 15+ years."

Berti played parts of eight seasons at the MLB level with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018), Miami Marlins (2019-23), New York Yankees (2024) and Cubs (2025). He also briefly played in the Cleveland Guardians' system before making his debut.

Berti was part of the Marlins teams that clinched National League Wild Card berths in 2020 and 2023. He also appeared in four October games with the pennant-winning Yankees in 2024 before a right hip flexor strain ended his season prematurely.

Berti retires with a .256 aveage, .333 on-base percentage and .357 slugging percentage in 512 regular season games.

Known more for his foot speed than his bat, Berti led MLB in stolen bases in 2022, when he stole 41 bases in 46 attempts in only 102 games with the Marlins. In 2023, Berti set career highs in games (133), plate appearances (424), home runs (seven), RBIs (33) and batting average (.294).

Berti was drafted by Toronto in the 18th round in 2011 and didn't reach the majors until age 28, debuting for the Blue Jays in September 2018.

Berti's baseball career also included four games with Team Italy at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and a stint with the Canberra Cavalry in the Australian League in 2013-14.

Although Berti's offensive profile was not suited for an era of the game that emphasized slugging over speed, he stuck around by being a versatile defender. In 2023 alone, he appeared at second base, third base, shortstop, left field and right field.

"I want to thank the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, and Chicago Cubs for giving me a chance to play the game I love professionally. It was an honor to represent such great MLB organizations."
