Cris Cyborg takes on former top UFC bantamweight contender Ketlen Viera in what could well be the final fight of her career this coming Saturday, Aug. 22.
In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, it was crucial to extract the most important details surrounding her thoughts on her trailblazing career, the state of MMA at present and her plans post retirement, whenever that may come.
So the most important question came right out of the gate.
Does she use iPhone or Android?
"iPhone," she replied.

Cris Cyborg Coy on Future After Ketlen Viera Title Fight
Despite many touting this as being Cyborg's retirement fight (she has no fights left on her current PFL deal and she has openly spoken about plans to finish her career in 2026), Cyborg stressed that the forthcoming featherweight title fight this weekend may not necessarily be her swan song.
"This is my next fight — could be my last fight — but the reality is that it's my last fight in contract with the PFL," Cyborg said. "Every [one of] the last three fights I did, I was always thinking, 'Well, it can be my last fight, it can be my last fight.' I'm 41 years old, but I enjoy what I do. I'm fighting better at 41 than when I was 21 years old.
"For me, it's the honor of fighting Kevin Vieira. She's a big name in sport. She's fought a lot of legends. She's really tough...I'm very happy to fight her. She's top 10 in her division [in the UFC]. Tough fight."
When the reigning PFL champion, whose only pro defeat after debuting in 2005 came at the hands of the widely-considered GOAT Amanda Nunes, started out, there was hardly a vast infrastructure set up for women's MMA.
"When I started training, there weren't a lot of girls fighting at that time," she said. "But I went to one fight in Brazil, watched live two girls fighting. Then I said, 'Maybe I can do this.'"
Instead, Cyborg drew inspiration from women competing in other fighting disciplines. Notably, former Dutch kickboxing champion and pro boxer, Lucia Rijker.
"The girl I saw at the beginning of my career was Lucia Rijker," she said. "I didn't know it was her. I watched her fight [on DVD]. She's a, she's like a legend in sport. But I watched a lot more guys than girls, so I was a big fan of Fedor Emelianenko. I was a big fan of Ernest Hoost. I was in the same gym as Wanderlei Silva and Shoguno – I have a lot of male examples for me when I was watching fights.
"But I believe my dream was bringing the fight; having the girls fight like the guys. So I see the models – the guys fighting – and I wanted to produce exciting fights for the people who really enjoy watching women fight."

Having shared back in June that former opponent Nunes may showdown against reigning UFC Bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison in the fall, Cyborg gave her prediction as to how the fight might go between them – and to whom she gives the edge.
"Amanda Nunes has a lot of tools to beat Kayla," she stated. "Kayla, she's more into grappling. I believe she doesn't want to stand-up with Nunes. If Amanda Nunes stops the take-downs from Kayla Harrison, she is going to win the fight. And then you can say Amanda Nunes, she's coming from retirement, a long time with no fighting.
"Kayla, before we thought, 'Okay, she'll have some advantage because she's been active and fighting.' But now she's a little bit behind because she did her [neck] surgery. So I don't know who to pick. But if she keeps it in stand-up, I believe in Amanda Nunes."
What are Cyborg's Plans After Retirement From MMA?
It has been widely reported that the champion will be pursuing veterinary school at the conclusion of her career in MMA, and Cyborg gave a clear answer as to why.
"I believe that you have to love what you do," she says. "And I love what I do. I started training in the sport when I was 12 years old. I'm 41, and I love every single day. It's no sacrifice. I wake up in the morning and enjoy every single moment.
"So for the next chapter of my life, what is going to be enjoyable for me to do? And when times get hard I will continue to do. I love being around the animals. I love to help them. I love to learn to help them. So this is one dream when I was a kid. This is the one thing I'm going to love to do. It's not like I need to do to make money."
The Cyborg-Viera fight will take place on Aug. 22 in Tampa Bay, Florida. Tickets and all other information and updates regarding Cris Cyborg can be found here.
