The Emmy Awards will leave its long-running broadcast network rotation for Amazon Prime Video in 2027 under a six-year exclusive global streaming deal, the e-commerce giant and the Television Academy announced on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, Prime Video will stream the annual awards honoring the best in TV for free to all audiences, including nonsubscribers, in more than 240 countries and territories.

Prime Video's rights to the Emmys will begin with the 2027 ceremony. NBC, owned by Comcast, aired the 2026 ceremony on Sept. 14.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In the release, Prime Video was named as the "permanent home" for the Emmys, in contrast to the rotating agreement in place years prior.

The switch ends the traditional "wheel-deal" setup to broadcast the awards, where ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox took turns hosting the Emmys each year. The system has been in place since at least 1994, with the most recent eight-year contract expiring this year.

"Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share," Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said in a statement.

"Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year," he said.

The decision to move the 70-plus-year-old awards show to streaming reflects a broader trend in a shifting media landscape as Americans continue to ditch broadcast and cable TV for streaming service subscriptions. Streaming services have pushed further into live events in recent years, securing entertainment and sports rights alongside broadcast networks, and even winning rights that were previously exclusive to networks.

In December 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a deal with Alphabet's YouTube and YouTube TV for media rights to the Oscars, taking over from ABC in 2029. Netflix has exclusively aired the SAG Awards since 2024.
