Despite being affected by injuries to star players, including breakout wide receiver Christian Watson, the Green Bay Packers have mustered a respectable 5-3 record entering Week 9. Watson went down with a rib injury against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football, and was forced to exit the game.

Watson was transported to the hospital via ambulance after coughing up blood on the Packers' sideline during Thursday's game. In a shocking twist, Watson later returned to the game in the same ambulance he left in, running down the tunnel before returning to the contest.

The veteran wideout mustered eight catches for 113 receiving yards over 10 targets, tallying 17.3 fantasy points in PPR, good for a WR11 finish for Week 8. Watson enters Week 9 ranked fourth in the NFL in receiving yards, and ranks third among all receivers in fantasy production so far this season. After his stellar performance, it was revealed that Watson suffered a broken rib, raising concerns over his availability for this week's matchup against the New England Patriots.

Christian Watson is having a career year:

🧀 42 receptions (13th)
🧀 6 receiving TDs (2nd)
🧀 708 receiving yards (4th)
🧀 14.6 avg (4th)

Christian Watson Appears To Be Trending Upward For Week 9

On Monday, Packers passing game coordinator Jason Vrable offered some insight on Watson's injury outlook against New England, offering that the receiver is dealing with rib soreness but "doing great" during the early stages of the week. Watson received a few extra days of rest thanks to a Thursday night matchup in Week 8, and remains listed as questionable with crucial appearances at practice awaiting later in the week.

His latest update is positive, but should be taken with a grain of salt this early in the week. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Watson's status, as his injury could slightly hamper outlook against the No. 8-ranked defense in yards allowed.

Potential Absence Bolsters Matthew Golden, Raises Sleeper

If Watson is unable to suit up against New England, Matthew Golden's outlook could be significantly elevated in Week 9. Golden, who ranks seventh in receiving yards through eight weeks, will take on a significant chunk of the Packers' target share, along with star tight end Tucker Kraft. Kraft likely also takes on a greater role in a scenario without Watson, though Golden is the real draw in Green Bay's offense for fantasy players.

He enters Week 9 ranked as WR7 in PPR, carving out 16.4 points per week to Watson's 18.4-point average. Like Watson, Golden is in the midst of a breakout campaign behind a vastly expanded role in his second season. He's already nearly doubled his receiving totals across the board from his rookie campaign, and is currently on pace for 1,300 yards and nine touchdowns in year two.

Fellow second-year wideout Savion Williams would also command greater volume as Green Bay's WR2 behind Golden if Watson is absent, which could present notable upside as a Week 9 waiver target for lineups in need of a sleeper FLEX candidate in PPR. Williams has hauled in eight of his nine targets on the season thus far, and presents a reliable option for Jordan Love if Golden is bracketed.
